just bought the wife a 99, and three weeks later the trans acts up. its got a 5r55e thats flareing on the 2-3 shift. i changed the fluid and fiter, and the valve body seperator plate with the blown gasket. the trans still flares on 2-3 shift. the dealer says it needs vale body($300) and a flash update. took it to trans shop, they said it just needs 3rd shift solenoid ($60). how about some help from sombody who had the same problem. checked forum, couldn't find the same problem.

Looks like mabulok has the same issue. I do remeber something about the PCM needing a flash update, but a new valve body???? That part doesn't make sense to me.

post #11 on this thread shows the connectors and tells about the diagnostic capacity of the solenoids in the 5R55E, so I'm wary of the tranny shop's diagnosis as well.

Looks like Opera House knows a bit about the '99 5R55E issues, you might want to send him a PM.

thanks for the responce, brian. i think i got it fixed tonight. replaced the second gear shift solenoid, not the third gear. the tans shop guy called me back and said he had mistakenly told me the wrong one. the ford guy told me a little trick to help too. turn up the epc solenoid with a 15 torx screwdriver. just a very small amount, less than a 32nd is what he said. just came in from test driving the truck. seems to shifting ok, no flare, just shifts up thru the gears like it should.

Hey speed, where in PA are you?
