I have an 02 xlt 4x4 auto trans with 4.0 v-6. If I come to a really hard stop and I mean really hard with the brakes on hard right up until I stop my tranny will freewheel if I try to go again. Sometimes it will freewheel long enough for me to rev it up a few times. (not what you want when you just suddenly stopped in traffic so fast) . Anyways when it does finally catch it drops in so hard you think you got rear ended. I mean it's really violent when it catches. I added some fluid through the plug in the pan and it took only about half a quart. Then it started to drain back out so thats full. Unless the engine was supposed to be running when I did that? Anyways the situation got a little better after I did that but still shouldn't do it at all. Is there a problem with the filter falling off in the pan or some oil pick up issue I'm not aware of? Thanks Chad

Yes, The engine is supposed to be running

Chad,

Mine did the same thing. I found my tranny to be 2.5 quarts low on fluid. Mine would also do it if you went around a corner hard and then straightened out. But I know what you mean about the hard stops.
Anyway, I checked mine, it was two and half quarts low. I had just had it flushed, but I think mine was low from the stealership flush when I bought it.
The engine does have to be on, just like any other time you have checked a transmission on a car with a dipstick, except you use the plug in the bottom which it sounds like you are already familiar with. Idling in Park, with E-Brake on of course :D

Thanks for the reply dave. For some reason it never occured to me to have the thing running. If I would have put an ounces thought into it I would have realised it. Thanks so much. !!!

Chad,

One thing I forgot to put in was Ford says the temperature of the fluid should be between 80 and 120 deg. F. Like the dipstick used to say, Fluid Hot, idling in Park.

Welcome to this forum! I hope that you put in Mercon V, because anything else in a 5R55E would cause slippage! If you have Mercon III in there, don't worry. Lubegard makes an additive to convert Mercon III into Mercon V. If you still have this banging problem after all of this, then it might be possible that your TCC solenoid might be sticking, or partially clogged.

I got the Mercon V in there. I added the other 2 and 1/2 quarts this evening while idling hot in park. Everything is just hunky dory now. Thanks for the help all.

Chad,

Out of curiosity, did you just have yours flushed, changed, or anything like that. Or did it just start doing it??

Dave

No. I just bought it that way. I didn't notice it until I had it a few months. I will say however that when I was under there I noticed a big metal tag on the tranny that read "REMANUFACTURED" . that might be a clue Thanks Chad
