I've got a 2006 Explorer with the 4.6 and auto 4x4. When I first got it it had an issue where it would intermittently slip gears or buck on a shift, but I dropped the pain and replaced the filter and that seemed to go away. I drove it for probably 30,000 miles and it would come back every once in a while but it was maybe one time every 1000 miles or so. Well, the transmission completely gave out on me. It doesn't matter what gear I put it in (reverse, first, second or drive) it'll act like it wants to engage for a split second, then nothing. Has anyone else had a similar issue and know what could cause this? Any ideas for a fix that doesn't involve buying a whole new transmission? If it's something relatively cost effective, I'd like to keep it as a back up vehicle since it's near rust free which is rare here in MI.

Maybe another pan drop and refill. I looked at this years ago for my 2010. To do a real flush you need factory type equipment to open up thermal valves.
There are so many solenoids on the 6R80 that any gummed up stuck/sticky ones will wreck havoc

Perform TCM module reset

Then drive and see what transmission related DTCs you have.

Pan drop needs to be performed more than once.

You will need something like 14 quarts of mercon SP to fully refresh the liquid

The 6R60/6R80 transmissions are very picky about worn transmission fluid. I suggest doing a pan drain and refill and then doing it again within 5k miles. This will replace about 75% of the old fluid and might fix your problems. I also recommend following Bazz270's advice. How many miles are on the vehicle?
