This is not a question more of fyi in case someone encounters the same issue. A bit ago I replaced the intake and valve cover gaskets on my '92 X. All went back together as planned but when I took the truck for a test drive it would use 1st and 2nd but then I would watch the revs climb and the speedo drop. I rechecked all wire and vacuum connections up top and all looked good. I then crawled under the truck with it running and could hear a very faint whistling. after some feeling around on the top and sides of the tranny I found a vacuum line than had somehow come disconnected when I was working top side. Plugged it back in and the truck runs is running perfect again. Hope this helps someone.
