I have a 92 explorer 4X4 with an auto tranny. My X has 130,000 miles on it. The other day while pulling up to a red light the X died. It acted as though it had a manual tranny and I forgot to push in the clutch. I could pop it into drive and get it going. If I put it into drive or reverse and just try to take off normal it dies. I took it to a shop in town and they checked the wiring and verified the solenoids were working. He said there was some metal shavings in the fkuid. He also said it would cost $800.00 plus parts to fix it. My thought is it might be the torque convertor. What do you guys think? I was told if it is the torque convertor, more than likely the metal shavings are coming from it since the tranny still shifts good. All gears work, even passing gear. I can't get X going in reverse though. Anyway tell me what I should do. Replace TC or put a wreckin yard tranny in it. Also, what type of tranny is it?

You have the A4LD tranny. Getting one from a junk yard is only a cover up. That one will fail shortly if it already hasn't. These are very weak trannies. You're probably looking at a rebuild, which is very common for us. I'm taking mine in next weeks sometime to have mine looked at for a slipping 2-3 shift. Kind of a bummer, but what are ya gonna do? Good luck nonetheless. Maybe try using the search with you symptoms. Chances are someones already had this.

Yeah time for a tanny job. Shop around and get a good rebuilder to take care of it. I can tell you from personal experience a junk yard tranny is a terrible idea. Because of junk yard trannies I swapped mine 3 times in under 10,000 miles :banghead:

Addressing the issue of the sticking torque converter clutch (TCC), I recently found (thought I posted it in response to another, similar issue.) a TSB (Ford TSB #92-5-12) that makes reference to a spring in the valve body that collects crud and causes the TCC lockup valve to stick closed, the TCC to not disengage, and the engine to stall. There's probably no way to varify this condition without pulling the valve body. If your shop hasn't considered this issue, then you might get his opinion on it.
That said, the presence of the metal shavings in the fluid suggests that the rest of the transmission may not be long for this world. If he needs to replace the torque converter (I assume that's what the $800 + parts is for), you might ask his opinion on rebuilding the transmission while he has it out.

Lotsa sizzle.... not much steak. If you want to know what goes into a "do everything possible to improve the A4LD trannie, read the "My A4LD Rebuild"series I am working on in the General Explorations forum. Then you will understand what "upgrades" are, and are not.
