New guy here. Just bought a 2017 police explorer with the 3.5l Ecoboost. It had a broken shaft on the rear turbo, and in the course of changing it, pulled the right side stub shaft. I was under the impression that the axle stub was in the ptu, and at most I would loose something near 20oz of gear lube. However, out came considerably more fluid than that. In my panic, I slid my whole bucket of oil dry under the leak. It's hard to gauge how much came out, since it's now mixed with quite a bit of oil dry. But if I had to guess, it was near 2 quarts.
That leaves me with 2 possibilities, the ptu was massively overfilled, or the stub shaft rides in transmission fluid, not the gear lube of the ptu.
I did pull the drain plug after the fact, and the ptu oil is perfectly clean looking with no odor, leading me to believe that someone has been there before, and perhaps overfilled?
If I stick my finger in the stub shaft seal, the lube that I can touch doesn't smell like transmission fluid, and appears to be more gear lube colored.
Any comments?

Well.. I got the turbo replaced. And bolted everything back together. I filled the ptu from the vent line, with a syringe. I'm up to temp, no leaks, but it looks like the answer to my question is that the stub shaft rides in transmission fluid I suppose. I put the only quart of trans fluid I had in her, and it's still not touching the stick. So, perhaps I was right and I lost 2 quarts.
Or it was low when I bought it. All I know is it pulled itself up on the trailer (barely).. But it had a turbo with a broken shaft dumping oil into the exhaust and the intake, so I wasnt surprised that it ran poorly and had no power.
I guess I'm off the the parts place for more atf.
If I get that sorted out, now it's showing Service AdvanceTrack. And it sounds like perhaps a bad u joint..

Further updates, though no one seems to be interested. Perhaps it will help someone in the future.
It took 2 more quarts to get back to full, so 3 total. I'd expect to loose that much whenever you pull a stub shaft.
I replaced the rear turbo from RockAuto, it was a Rotormaster. When I got it all on, I had codes galore.. "service advacetrac", "see manual", "hill decent not available", P108 MAP sensor fault, and etc. They would clear, but instantly reappear.
While inspecting things it turns out the MAP sensor plug was not latched, and making intermittent connection at best.
After I snapped it back in, I cleared the codes again and they stayed gone. It now runs and drives as it should.
