I have been having issues with my trans not shifting correctly. When accelerating after coming to a stop, the transmission will not shift from first to second gear until the engine revs to about 2500 rpms and sometimes will not shift until 4000 rpms. I dumped a bottle of Lucas stop slip fluid in the trans, and the fluid level is right where it should be. Also, the fluid does not smell burnt.

This problem has me stumped, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Rough, Harsh, or Delayed 1-2 Upshift

Improperly adjusted kickdown linkage.
Improperly adjusted intermediate band.
Main control pressure too high.
Governor sticking.
Damaged intermediate servo.
Valve body bolts loose or too tight.
Sticking or dirty valve body.
Vacuum leak to diaphragm unit.
Vacuum diaphragm bent, sticking, or leaking.

Im having the same issue except for mine just wont shift into second at all, it only goes from first to third when its cold. When its hot , ihave to let off the gas in order for it to shift to third... What could the problem be?

I think I have figured out that my trans is not shifting into second gear at all. After using the search function here, it seems most other people who have had this problem it is either the vacuum modulator or the governor that was to blame. I was wondering if there is anyway to tell which one might be to bame for the problem or if both parts are at fault? Any help is greatly appreciated.

just posted the same question. having the same problem. its wierd drove for 10 min with no problems then put into park with out shutting off the truck then went to drive and the problem started.

This is exactly how my problem started except I had been driving on the interstate for about an hour.

modulators are cheap and easy to replace. If it wasn't the mod then that's one down and the governor is the problem. Also check the vacumn line from the motor to the mod for leaks!!!!

on the passenger side of the transmission midway between the bellhousing and tailshaft. It is just a diaphragm with a vacuum hose leading into it. You may have trouble seeing it past the heatshield and exhaust

so if that is ok where do we go from there?

from there check band adjustment and after that it would be nice to check fluid pressure, but you could just go to a tranny flush unless the fluid is burnt or low.

I got the vacuum modulator replaced, and the problem is not fixed. Should I replace the governor next?

would a leak in the front main seal cause this problem?

sometimes, yes

now i took a look at lines and when i took the line off the mod it had fluid come out of it. is this normal? i thought it was a vacume line?

if there is fluid in that line, the modulator is bad. When you take the modulator off, be careful to not lose the little pin in the modulator.

Changing a front seal means dropping a transmission, which is a big job in and of itself. What makes you suspect the front seal is leaking?

when i had an oil change done the tech said that the front main seal was leaking abit and Im always putting fluid in it, maybe 1 liter a every week and a half. one day i took off my intake mainifold and had it cleaned for me, and when i took it of it had red fluid all inside of it. tranny fluid maybe?

thanks for your help man, your awsome.

yeah, red in your intake manifold would be transmission fluid. Seeing it in your vacuum line from your modulator just confirms that.

Just a note, 99 times out of 100, you should not trust an tech at an oil change place when they are making a diagnosis of a problem on your vehicle. Most of them are "enthusiasts" who have started believing they are professionals because they are now "in a shop" and they are basically just trying to show off. Take a look under the vehicle yourself and see where the fluid is coming out or have a real mechanic look at it. Replacing that modulator will solve a lot of your losing fluid problem. I don't know how much driving you do in a week and a half, so I can't really tell you how much of your problem that will solve.

Last time I was at wally world buying some antifreeze, I started laughing out loud when I heard one of their "automotive technicians" telling an older couple who came in "we put on the tires... blah blah blah... and when we were checking out your car, one of your highbeams was out and your car was low 1/2 quart of oil, so that probably means you just went a little too long between oil changes."
