I have a 1992 ford explorer with a 4.0 L and a A4ld trans. Recently it started slipping, popping out of gear, when i press on the gas going up a hill or trying to pass someone. It only does this when the shifter is in OD, in Drive it shifts perfectly. It will pop out of gear even after the downshift from 4th to 3rd, or on takeoff though all the gears. What would cause this to only happen when in OD?

Welcome to the forum! And cheers to a fellow Alaskan :)

Check the shift linkage, it may be out of spec. There is an adjustment procedure I'm about to post. Worth a try.

First the instructions, as Ford put them.

The linkage is on the driver's side of the tranny and is pretty easy to access. Tools required are a flathead screwdriver or two. Hope your parking brake works because this is an easy way to get rolled over if you work on an incline.

I also pointed out the band adjusters.
