A couple of weeks ago my transmission started to slip. I checked the fluid and it was empty. So, I filled it up and checked for a leak but found nothing. It drove fine for a while. Then, the other day on the highway, the transmission just went out. I got some fluid and filled it up just enough to get it home, but the fluid was leaking out badly all the way down the road. Any ideas or suggestions?

Clean the tranny and all connections, pour in more fluid find leak then fix leak

Sorry to say this, 94 X + slipping Tranny= Toast.........Time for a rebuild:(

do you have an external leak? please find out. if not, your vacuum modulator could be defective, sucking in trans fluid to the engine and burning it. I'd like to know what you found out.

It looks like it's external. The fluid is definitely leaking out under the truck around the tranny area. My biggest concern is that the tranny needs to be replaced. Even a rebuilt one costs almost half of what I paid for the truck.

I had a 94 X a few years back. It ran fine then the tranny started to have some issues with reverse and some slipping. I had it rebuilt, it ran like sh*t on the way home, so my dad drove it back a few miles towards the shopand on teh way (the same day we got it) the tranny blew apart in the road, fluid everywhere. It had to be towed up to the shop again and redone. :fire: $1400 later it worked perfectly after they replaced everything in it. Those tranny's are trouble and need to be totally rebuilt with new parts if it will hold up for the long haul.

I would clean it up really well and find where the leak is first. With it leaking it won't shift right. Don't drive it unless its necessary until the leak is fixed. You are causing more damage every time it slips. Its unlikely, but fixing the leak may prolong the life of the trans and get you by for a while.

When you get it cleaned up, check to see if the leak is from the front of the transmission (bellhousing). Front seal problems are common. The problem is not the seal, but bushings inside the transmission that are shooting too much fluid at the seal. Many bad rebuilds will develop this problem again in six months.
