Physically it will fit, but they aren't controlled the same electronically and there is no easy way to get that to work. Plus a 96 transmission is going to be better than the one the 92 has, it has upgrades.
Stick with trying to find a 96 up transmission for your truck.
I think you need to stay with a 95 or 96 trans. This is known as the 4R55E. In 97, Ford introduced the 5R55E which again has different electronic controls due to the additional forward gear.
For Ford Explorer with the 4.0L engine:
91 -94 used A4LD (no electronic control except TC lockup)
95 -96 used 4R55E (electronic shift control using solenoids)
97 -01 used 5R55E (Sport and Sport Trac also used 5R55E even after 01, but I don't know the exact years)
I don't have a manual for the 96 (4R55E). I have the 5R55E. If you drop the pan (to change the filter or replace a solenoid) it takes approx 5 qts to refill. If you completely drain the transmission (take it apart and drain the valve body, the converter, etc) it is supposed to take 10.5 qts to refill.
Originally, the 4R55E used Mercon fluid. Now Ford says to use Mercon V fluid in all applications which originally used Mercon. So for the 4R55E, you should be okay with either. If you have a Ford trans that originally used Mercon V, you need to use Mercon V.

I think someone has tried this - I do not know if they were successful - The 96 originally had a 4R55E as noted above, the electronic shift control (PCM) is different for the 5R55E. Short answer - no, Longer answer - maybe, but I don't know the details.
