Put the gear shift lever...and a key on the column like a normal truck. No more poorly conducted shutdowns.

Now you're getting into a whole new discussion as to whether or not it actually is a truck. I refrain from calling it that. :)
Ford doesn't consider it one.

Peter

I call it the station wagon after my old Buick Electra Estate Wagon. Serves the same purpose, only better.
I've not had any problems fuelling the Explorer...but then, I put the gear shift dial in park before shut down.
I may try fuelling after a shutdown while selected in Drive. Just for s#!t$ and grins.

Ouch, why would anyone do that ? Do they think Ford just puts in extra parts just for fun and to reduce their profit margin? lol
I'm speaking of the fuel nozzle attached to the pump hose.

My ST does this too. My wife gets so pissed as it is her daily so normally fills up. There has never been a time we have shut it off at a gas station and didn't put it in park first.

Unusually have to pull the nozzle out a good inch for it to not stop constantly.

ok yeah, this is 100% my situation too.

This has happened to me on multiple explorers and my MKZ.
I know this isn't in fashion, but I turn the gas pump handle upside down and pump the fuel that way. That way, it doesn't cut out.

You need to keep an eye on it in case it doesn't auto-stop when full.

There are too many cost-cutting measures. Replacing a 5 cent gas cap with a 4 cent metal flap and spring hurts the customer. It allows dirt in, doesn't fully close, and can trip the check-engine.

I actually had this problem with a '98 Explorer (not capless). Lived with it for years, until finally the fuel tank filler neck physically broke, had it repaired, and never had the problem again (owned the vehicle for ~100K miles after that).

Hi all, sorry for bad thread title, couldn't come up with a better one. :)

I have a 2020 Limited, I find the capless fuel system is ... picky, I cant put the nozzle all the way in or it just clicks off every like 100ml of fuel, so I have to pull it out to just the right spot to fuel. Is this just mine, is this just the way they work? Is there something I could do, or would I have to bring it in to the dealer to make it better ?

To note, I have not tried removing and reinstalling it, should I try that, does it just screw out or is that a bad idea ?
Same problem on my 2020 XLT, I had to control the flow of the pump, if you press it all the way it will stop. I tried to look online if anyone is experiencing it but this is the first thread I found. Maybe it’s not just Explorer, probably the whole ford capless fill problem. Any other solution besides slowing down the fuel flow?

Yeah seems a lot of us have been suffering in silence. For me not inserting the nozzle all the way "fixes" the issue. Simply pull it out bit by bit until it fills correctly.

All these extra parts to save $5 for a stinking gas cap. Gotta love their better ideas...

Should make sure a design engineer is signed up on this forum.

And Mikey*TX, we will need the list for I'm sure there is a complaint somewhere in that list -- hahaha...

Maybe the fuel nozzle is being inserted to far. This is from the owners manual. I haven't had the problem so reaching for straws.

Just to add my mustang has the capless and never once had the issue. My wife and I go to the same gas stations.

Yes when fueling do not top off your gas. This will clog the carbon filter and cause this type of problem.

Although the Manuals state to stop after the first auto shut-off, I have always stopped after the 2nd auto shut-off/click on my vehicles. Never had an issue with that. I just make sure to leave the nozzle in the same position.

Parts for my 10 Fusion were over $200 so I just live with the little yellow light -- a night lite of sorts...

That's the "fun" of owning an older car, as it ages and develops it's own quirks you get to know. :-p

Hi, I've been searching this morning and see many similiar issues with other generation explorers but haven't found any for the 20+. I've got 25k miles on my 2020 XLT and the last 3 fill ups I've had trouble getting fuel in the tank at 3 different service stations. The pump immediately clicks off. I've tried pulling the nozzle slightly out and filling on the medium speed but it still takes several attempts and usually results in super slow filling by hand (can't use even the middle speed detent on the pump handle). Is this a filler neck issue? I'm going to add it to the list to check when my explorer goes in next month for transmission issues, just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and what the fix is.

Love the car, will really love it if/when they smooth out my 1-2 and 3-4 shifting and early downshifting when slowing down. But my wife won't fill the car up with gas after it shot gas back out the fill hole last time after removing the spout a little too far trying to get it to pump. That was a smelly disaster.
