5.4L 3V with P030X and/or p0316 Accompanied by Spark Knock
05-06 Expedition, F-250, F-350
This article supersedes tSB 05-10-15 to update the model years and service procedure.
Some 04-06 F-150 and 05-06 F-250, F-350, Expedition and Navigator vehicles equipped with a 5.4L 3V engine, may exhibit the mal###tion indicator lamp (MIL) on with misfire diagnostic trouble codes P0300 through P0308 and/or P0316, and a spark knock.
It may be necessary to replace the long or short block if damaged, and/or install latest level spark plugs, and or update the pCM calibration.
1. Isolate the engine bank causing the misfire/knock using diagnostic trouble codes and/or stethoscope.
2. De-power each cylinder individually on affected bank(s), one by one.
a. If noise dissapears when any cylinder(s) are de-powered, proceed to Step 3 for those cyliners
b. If noise does not disappear, use power balance test to isolate afected cylinders and proceed to Step 3.
3. Perform cylinder leak down/compression test and/or use a borescope to check isolated cylinders for damage (scuffed cylinder bore walls).
a. If engine damage is confirmed, replace the long or short block assembly under the provisions of the latest edition of the Powertrain Reference Guie. Be sure the latest level spark plugs are installed on vehicles built before April 22, 2005. In addition, update the PCM Calibration for 05-06 F-250, F-350, Expedition, Navigator, and 06 F-150 using WDS release B39.15 or higher and/or B40.2 or higher. This new calibration is not included in the B40 CD. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com.
NOTE: THE LATEST LEVEL PLUG WILL BE MARKED WITH (PZT-1F) ON THE PROCELAIN INSULATOR.
b. If no engine damage is found, be sure the latet leve spark plugs are installed. In addition, update the PCM.
4. If the misfire/knock condition is still present further diagnostics may be required to determine other sources of misfire, such as fuel injection monitoring or coil integrity checks with WDS diagnostic equipment.
