2002 Explorer XLT
I'm replacing my girlfriend's stock car stereo on her 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. I don't know much about the type of stock sound system only that the stereo is the "Premium" sound system (according to the model # on the back).

So, I ordered a wiring harness and dash kit and pulled the trim out to expose the back of the stereo. To my surprise, I see a 2nd modular connection! What are these two wires connected to?

yellow is audio/climate control clockspring, gray/black is vehicle speed signal. Typically not used for aftermarket audio installation.

Just for clarification...

So you're saying, I don't need to connect these wires into the aftermarket stereo? I didn't know that the stock stereo needed to know the vehicle's speed.

Thanks a lot for your help in this matter.

The VSS should be for speed adaptive volume control. Visteon probably didn't load the software to support it until the later radios. I saw it mentioned in the 2005 owners manual. The audio/climate sender is for the factory steering wheel controls.

Thanks, y'all. This is why I love the Explorer forums. I've got it connected up. Now I need to find the parking brake wiring to connect one last wire.

I'm replacing the stock 6-disc changer with a Pioneer AVIC-U310BT 4.3-Inch In-Dash Navigation Receiver with CD Player and Bluetooth. $272 on Amazon http://amzn.to/9rQ5F6
