Upgrading Stock Sub

i have a 96 eddie bauer and i was wondering about upgrading the stock sub.

is it possible and what do you have to do to upgrade to an after market sub

do you have to get an amp also?

I've heard it sounds great. As far as an amp, not sure. I don't see why you couldn't run it off the factory amp.
