I have a 1997 Explorer with a V-6 engine. I am thinking of getting a 2000 or 2001 with a V-8. Is the V8 engine really anymore powerful than the V6 and what is the reliability of it? Also, are the trannys in the V8s any stronger and more reliable than the V6s? Thanks for your inputs!

Do a search on this stuff and you'll find plenty of info. Yes, the V8 offers a bit more horsepower and a lot more torque then the SOHC motor you have now. Its an extremely reliable motor, having been around in almost every Ford vehicle in one form or another since 1968. One of the best motors ever built, without a doubt. The tranny is the 4R70W, which is again one of the better trannies Ford's built lately. Much better, reliability wise, then the A4LD/5R55E family that your tranny is from now. Only drawback is you're going to a 4 speed auto instead of the 5 I assume you have now. If you like having true 4WD, you'll have to stick with the V6. V8's came only with AWD and 2WD. You're going to get even worse gas mileage too, probably around 12/17.

There were also some concerns about the build quality of the late 5.0's as the castings weren't maintained properly since the engine line was being discontinued.

Where can I find more information on this?

Another option might be to upgrade with some mods)all bolt ons, Even N/A you can get your SOHC close to 4.6 V8 specs.

I'm pretty sure it was from BlueOval News. I also think it was discussed on this site as well. Was probably about 4 years ago.
