Hello,

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer 4.0L v6 SOHC...

Right now, I'm running just a magnaflow performance muffler and no resonator. It has a nice sound, but I want it louder. I was thinking of replacing my two cats in the back with straight pipe. Would this sound good? I'm primarily looking for loud, but I don't want it to sound like complete ****. Another idea was to run my pipe at a 90 degree angle to get it a little deeper.

so my final idea is...

- Magnaflow Performance Muffler
- No resonator (replaced with pipe)
- No cats (replaced with pipe)
- 90 degree tailpipe outlet

would this setup (given above) make my v6 loud and deep? or would it sound like ****? If anyone has any suggestions PLEASE give them! I'm scared to go through with this idea, because I don't want it to sound terrible.

THANKS!
I'm in highschool by the way, if that makes a difference :D

As you know the 4.0L SOHC has a higher note by design, most if not all V6 engines do. At lower revs it can sound quite deep until wound up above 2500 RPM. The Magnaflow is one of the better sounding SOHC mufflers, however I believe ditching the resonator will only enhance the high note and drone. Can't discuss deleting cats here but don't think it would improve much, OEM cats are designed well and relatively free flowing. I've never heard a V6 that sounds remotely close to a V8 at higher RPM, regardless of displacement, it's all about harmonics. Many will claim this but put them side by side at any RPM and the difference is distinct and clear. The Dynomax SuperTurbo is known to be one of the deepest sounding mufflers but it's also one of the quietest. Before you spend any more money I suggest you consult a GOOD performance exhaust specialist for advice and tell them exactly the sound you want to attain. GL

a larger tip will give you a lower exhaust tone...

sorry to keep bumping this but I really need some more opinions...
