2002 limited v8
pretty much all of the talk of exhaust on here is about the v6 which from what I believe is much different than the v8. Also i heard on here somewhere that the v8 has a 2.5 inch pipe not 2.25?????On my 2002 limited v8 i dont have a resonator at the end of my exhaust. It goes catylitc converter huge stupid exhaust then pipe out the back. So my questions are:

Can I just unbolt the muffler and throw a fm50 or magnaflow in there then bolt it back up? If the pipe is already 2.5 i dont care about the bends just want it louder.

Also if I could just replace it wouldnt the fm or magnaflow be shorter than the stock? So I would have to move the tailpipe up or my extra pipe to fill the gap?

I dont want to hear anything about v6 casue i heard it all... looking for something cheap only flowmaster or magnaflow.

Fedy,

If you just wanna throw a FM50 or Magnaflow Muffler alone, then yes the muffler will be shorter. You will need to add a small piece of pipe to make up the difference.

Factory exhaust is 2.25'' for both V6 / V8...

since i dont have resonators the muffler is the only restriction just swapping that out would i notice a big difference in power and sound? And sinse u had both what would you recomend for the most power and nice sound? I feel like ur the only one that answers me hahaha

Fedy,

Take a look @ my factory exhaust in this thread...

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=286325

the first 2 pics, are what your factory exhaust looks like correct ?

if so... in the first picture you should notice the exhaust clamp prior to the bulky muffler. about an inch before that clamp there is a 1/4'' reduction in the size of the pipe ( 2.5'' to 2.25'' ).

following me so far ?

I installed a muffler with the factory pipe, and all i really gained was noise. then when i went back to the exhaust shop to run 2.5'' pipe, allowing me to really open up the exhaust. once you get rid of that pipe size reduction, and run 2.5'' or 2.75'' since you have a V8. you will think your driving a totally different truck.

( Not sure if 3'' will fit over the rear axle - could work, but i just dont know )

I promise you, if you put out the money for a custom 2.5'' / 2.75'' exhaust... you will have a big smile on your face !

you will notice even better MPG's then your already impressive numbers, and you will net ( Rough Estimate ) 10-15 HP/TQ...

V6 and V8 exhaust are essentially the same, so if you've heard it all, you don't need advice. You won't notice a huge increase in power, any gains you feel are going to be mostly mental from the extra sound. If you want louder, then just get a different muffler welded into the place of your stocker. No emmisions issues, 50 state legal. If you want to increase power, I would suggest 2.5" or 3" single pipe off the factory Y-pipe after the cats, back to a Magnaflow muffler that matches the pipe size, then to either a single 3" or dual 2.5" pipes out the rear. For the ultimate setup, have somebody build a new Y-pipe with dual 2.5" Magnaflow high flow converters ( http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-59956/ ), into a single 3" pipe back to a Magnaflow muffler ( http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-12198/ ), with dual 2.5" pipes back to the bumper. Magnaflow mufflers will flow a little better than Flowmaster, and won't give you the cackle of the chambered muffler. This setup would be 49 state legal, as long as the shop does a good job.

I wouldn't run a muffler. I would simply cut the muffler off. It's not that loud and still sounds good. It's not raspy and poppy sounding.

^ no way... just my opinion...

I know what your saying fella lol - Dumps = No No

whether you have a V6 or V8 X, you should always have a muffler. X's just dont sound good straight piped...

just my opinion...

I disagree. I think my truck has a very unique sound compared to other vehicles with no muffler. :)

so i think im gonna end up unbolting muffler and replace with magnaflow and run 2.5 inch pipe out the back

Dont forget to eliminate that pipe reduction before the muffler, it makes a world of difference fella...

of course how much u thiik in the ball park it would cost just for all the parts (muffler, pipe)

for a shop to do a custom exhaust job, it will vary depending on the shops prices...

literally the ball park can be huge lol, you could be anywhere in the range of
( 200$-450$ ). Like I said it all depends on what your local shop(s) rates are...

200$-450$ = ( Parts + Labor )

I paid 240 to have it y-piped after the rear cat and dualed out with 4" tips.

u got a video?

No I don't. I can tell you with no muffler, it's toned. It seems to me you get more popping sound out of a true dualed exhaust vs. y piped. Even with a cat gone it still doesn't pop while driving, even at very high rpms. I think and people have told me it sound more like a muscle car sound. My truck is pretty dang loud inside and out, but I love the way it sounds. I haven't heard any other piped vehicle (mostly trucks) come close to sounding this good while still being pretty loud.

If things work out tomorrow, I'll have a vid comparing my Flowmaster 70 to Tyler02's Magnaflow. This isn't the first time we've tried to meet up, so don't hold your breath.

Jtbuck92- Make a vid;)
