Vaccum leak test results

1997 Ford Explorer
1997 Ford Explorer V6 4x4 (awd) ohv 138,000 miles. I had my engine diagnosed and the tech said the results were a faulty carbon canistor and vent solenoid. They then performed a smoke test and located a " vaccum leak at carbon canistor and vent solenoid" P0446

What does the vent solenoid (carbon canistor vent solenoid) look like? Where should I start? Should I replace the entire carbon canistor? Will the check engine light automatically shut off when the problem is fixed, or do i have to get the engine rescanned?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just don't know where to start or what to do.

if anyone can help me out with this issue, please let me know. I have to pass smog and I refuse to pay someone for a job that I am able to do.

Thanks Tbars4 for the great links. I'll go through them.

Dogfriend did give me great info and I appreciate it, I just don't know where to start or what to replace. It seems like there are 2 areas that I am not sure about. One is the purge valve under the battery tray and the other is the canister/solenoid above the spare tire. I'm guessing that I'll have to replace both parts just to play it safe.

The computer diagnosis stated "vent solenoid" which is where I am getting confused.
