I put an older Pioneer Stereo in my '91 XLT. The Reception is HORRIABLE. I never had any problem with this unit in other cars. Just for kicks I put 2 other brand units in this rig with the same result TOTALY S&^%%Y reception.

Lot's of static, stations fade in and out, seems worse on bumpy roads. I also installed an aftermarket antenna with a signal booster, made NO difference.

Any suggestions?

If it's worse on bumpy roads that tells me a wire is loose somewhere. Bouncing is causing something to hook and unhook. Check all your wires again.

Try adding a ground to the radio's case.

How? I was leaning toward a bad ground. I can't see a ground strap from the engine to the body or frame. Where is it usually located on my 91 Explorer? My last rig was an 85 Ranger, the ground was from the pass side exhaust manifold to the firewall.

I'm not having the usual other problems though, like flashing head lamps, radio cutting out completely, hard starting when hot ect.

Find a ground point on the vehicle, like around the fuse box, then run a wire from that point to the radios metal case.
