I was driving home on monday and I hear this clunk, immediately the RPMS increase and the car seems to have stopped accelerating, I tried hitting the gas, the Engine accelerated but the car didnt move. So I immediately think ive lost my tranny. I try every gear and nothings working so I go to shift into park and its grinding as its shifting into park...so Im stranded and I call a tow truck and have it towed to a nearby shop. They called me back this morning and told me they believe the transmission is gone, because the truck wouldnt go in reverse...weird thing is...it would go in Drive...and drive fine...so now ive gone from no movement to moving forward. Then they call me back and tell me that after it warmed up now the truck seems to act perfectly normal, it shifts into all gears completely normal...this doesnt make any sense to me...any ideas as to what could be causing this?

(the morning before the truck broke down I had some 4X4 problems, I couldnt get it to engage, and when it did my front left wheel hub was making a very loud grinding and cruching sound and the truck was pulling hard to the left. when I turned off the 4X4 it stopped pulling but the sound stayed. Before I left to head home I unlocked the hub by reversing 15 feet. The sound went away and the car acted normal.)

Thanks,
Aaron

Did the shop drop the pan and check for any "parts" that shouldn't be there? When was the last time the fluid/filter were changed? Glacier199, Brain and OperaHouse are the A4LD experts. Hopefully they can chime in with better info.

Do you still have the automatic hubs? If yes, those are classic signs of shot hub. Convert to manual, you'll be much happier.

probably valve(s) sticking in the valve body
