I have found 3 or 4 vin decoding links. They all reflect the same information, position 4 in the vin code indicates the Brake type and GVWR. The explorer I am going to go look at is 1FMD... which I can figure out means 5001-6000 lbs GVWR.... but none of the sites indicates what the Z means... and I have seen Explorers all the way back to 96 with the Z.

ANy Ideas?

Hmmm...

So if Z=5640 and D=5001 to 6000, is there really a difference? or is Z related to the AWD 5.0's?

I was hoping I could narrow down my search for an explorer by using the VIN to identify ones with the Tow package. I assume Ford would provide the higher capacity brakes and GVWR with the 6800 rated tow capacity available on some of the 5.0 explorers (Tow rating #'s according to Carpoint.com)

I just went back and looked again, and I'm a bit confused. According to the info I have, my Explorer's fourth digit should be a 1, but it's actually a Y. If I had side impact air bags (which I don't), then the code of Y would be correct for mine (4001-5000 lb GVWR), and the Z code would be 5001-6000 lb GVWR. So what I said earlier might not be correct. Sorry!

Here:

I have a 2000 factory service CD:

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a 17-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted on the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN number is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label.

The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer identifier.

l 1FM — Ford Motor Company, USA, multi-purpose vehicle

l 1FC — Ford Motor Company, USA, stripped chassis

l 4M2 — Mercury, USA, multi-purpose vehicle

The fourth VIN position is the vehicle brake type and GVWR code (all vehicles use hydraulic brakes).

l Y — 4,001-5,000 pounds GVWR, Explorer/Mountaineer (less side impact air bags)

l Z — 5001-6000 pounds GVWR, Explorer/Mountaineer (less side impact air bags)

l M — 5,001-6,000 pounds GVWR, US Postal stripped chassis (less air bags)

l D — 5,001-6,000 pounds GVWR, Explorer/Mountaineer (with side impact air bags)

Positions 5 through 7 indicate vehicle line, series and body type.

l U60 — Explorer, 4x2, two-door, Sport

Do they make Explorer mailtrucks or something? There were a couple references to USPS stripped chassis vehicles, but I don't think I've ever seen a USPS Explorer.

And what does RHD stand for?

RHD=Right Hand Drive

My CD is for the 2000 Model Year - I don't know if it applies to any other year..

That's pretty strange about the 2000 codes. The info I was checking was the 1999 factory service CD, and the codes were listed differently, and apparently incorrectly (at least in my case). Thanks for clearing that up, Frank.

BTW, the RHD probably stands for Right Hand Drive.

That's cool. I've never seen a right-hand drive Explorer.

Don't you hate that feeling of once you hear of something new, you want one

FYI ...

That previous post applies to '98 and earlier explorers from what I have been able to tell by looking at different VIN's and model years....

The GVWR codes (VIN position 4) for explorers changed in 1999 from the straight GVWR ratings of A,B,C...J to a code of Y, Z, C & D...etc. in 1999 and newer, the code also indicates presence of side airbags.

The chassis codes (VIN position 5,6 & 7) changed in 2000 - the U22, 24, 32 & 34 apply to '99 and earlier models.

My VIN is a
1FMDU63P.....

That other VIN post (spiper) must be for older Exp's......
