i am going to attempt the install myself - the more research i do the more spooked i get

from my research so far, it seems there are several types of power door locks on cars - someone said the explorer has reverse polarity locks but did not mention the need for two additional relays for the alarm to work - can anyone confirm the type of power door locks used on the 95 xlt? the explorer has the factory alarm and keyless entry

i don't have the device yet and cannot find the install manual online - the12volt.com web site says the install for the 5701 is similar - and that manual mentions the need for the added relays on a reverse polarity system (or a 451m module that has the relays and diodes in it)

i found the remote starter on amazon - one amazon vendor has it for $110 + $7 shipping - i bought from another vendor on amazon for $115 + $5 shipping - its the viper 5301 model, remote start with no alarm, 2 way fob communication - i was looking for the 5101 model (1 way communication) and found it on ebay for about $100 - the 5301 is $230 on ebay - i noticed the vendor i bought from has the price at $159 now so i assume the price i paid was a mistake - hopefully, amazon will have them stand by the price i paid for the product - msrp is $350

the vendor i did not buy from still has theirs for $110 + $7 shipping - someone should snap it up and join me on this misadventure - i mean adventure

the answer seems to be '3 wire negative' or 'type b' power door locks - the connection to the 5301 can be this simple:

explorer power lock wire pink/yellow connects to the viper harness for the locks green
explorer power unlock wire pink/light green connects to the viper harness for the locks blue

both wires in the explorer can be accessed behind the driver's side kick panel

this will work, but it might be at the expense of the progressive unlock feature

the viper has another connection to preserve the progressive lock feature (or add it to vehicles without progressive locks) - the primary harness has an orange wire that would unlock all the doors while the connection above would only unlock the driver's door with one pulse (one press of the unlock button on the remote)

with either method, the lock remains the same

no additional relays are needed for either method

i will post which method is necessary to preserve progressive unlock

Sloop - I don't know if you've had this installed yet. I have the 5301 installed on my explorer and love it. Just an fyi, I started the install (not a novice when it comes to electronics in cars) and had several issues with the install. I lost patience and had a friend who worked at Best Buy have their alarm guy complete the install. He had a specialized component that required to 2 keys to activate the system once installed. Not sure if this was Viper specific tool or not, but the impression I got was that it was.

yeah - that is the pats system (passive antitheft) - where the key has a tramsmitter in it and the ignition has an antenna - my explorer is a 95 - pats was introduced to the explorer in 98

i am going to try the install - there is an alarmpro web site that offers a product that is tech support for people like me - they will answer your questions about any alarm and any car - that is my plan b - plan c is an installer

evidently, these new units have changed from the previous ones - some different wires and a flex relay that has me thrown a little - the terminology has changed some too - the new install instructions are not online yet - and the hardcopy refers to sections that are not in the book - i am using some of the info fron the 5701 install instructions, the schematics and pinout charts from the ford tsp cd - and read lots of threads

my primary goal is to do no harm - lol - keep the explorer where i can drive it with or without the 5301

thought i'd try here too

1995 Ford Explorer XLT
4 door
6 cylinder OHV
2 wheel drive
automatic transmission
keyless entry with factory alarm
overhead console
no memory seats
no EATC
no message center
no heated mirrors

Pretty much the standard soccer mom version. I moved the radio to the accessory delay and installed the automatic dimming mirror with automatic

some connections are straightfroward but others are not - seems that these units were reworked from the previous vipers - and the install manual is not online yet (if i had a scanner...)

i got the connection chart, researched lots of threads and studies the ford technical specifications publications - but still have a few questions - my first is about the parking lights

it looks to me like this viper has an internal relay that supplies a 10 amp (+ or - depending on how the fuse is placed in the viper) output for the parking lights - the connection chart here shows a connection to the headlamp switch - it looks like that connection drives the coil in the explorer relay

connection chart info:

parking lights (-) - white/purple - driver kick panel
parking lights (+) - white/black - headlight switch

this is from the primary harness connection section

Install manual text: This wire should be connected to the parking light wire in the vehicle. See Setting the light flash polarity section of this guide for polarity settings.

For parking light circuits that draw 10-amps or more, the internal jumper must be switched to a (-) light flash output. (See Setting the light flash polarity section of this guide.) P/N 8617 or a standard automotive SPDT relay must be used on the H1/11 light flash output harness wire.

Install manual text: Setting the light flash polarity.

Light flash (+)/(-) polarity

The internal fuse is used to determine the light flash output. In the (+) position, the onboard relay will output (+) 12V on the white wire, H1/11. In the (-) position, the onboard relay will supply a (-) output. When wiring into a multiplex circuit, you can replace the fuse with a resistor (paying attention to the polarity setting). (Refer to diagram on p. 24, H1/4 white/brown wire description.)

i have the schematics for the external lights and the headlight switch pinout on the web site

http://mysite.verizon.net/respkm62/viper5301ina1995fordexplorer/

i also have the install manual text for each harness connection if anyone needs it - as i find the correct connections, i will fill in the info

can someone help with this connection?

the connection chart info was wrong - the primary harness white wire connects to a brown wire - i made the connection in the passenger kick panel

anyone know what arms the factory antitheft system? i can't find a wire that arms it. my 5301 will arm the antitheft when you press the lock button IF the door is open. if the doors are closed, it won't arm it.

the viper has an arm wire. pulses (-) 200ma. the explorer schematics are on the web site above

this one has me stumped
