I am in the market for a 2000 Explorer 5.0. Was an opening sunroof (installed at the factory) available in 2000? Ideally, the kind that is glass, that opens, and has a sun shade on the inside when you are not using it. Was it fairly common or rare?

I live in SoCal and leave the sunroof open about 1.5 inches in my current car to keep it from exploding in the sun. I want to do the same with the Explorer.

Thanks,

i have a 2001 with a subroof that slides back into the headliner.. it is factory.. i would guess they were avial for 2000 also

Since '95 power sunroofs were an option on them. The newer it is, the less rare they seem.

yeah 2000 did offer a sun roof

Since we are on the subject of the sunroof. How much would it be to install an aftermarket sunroof?

is a factory sunroof rare in 93 limited? cuz i got one

The answer is pretty obvious: "It depends."

People on this board have gotten sunroofs (a.k.a. moonroofs in most instances) installed for $800 - $1,100. The two shops I have found within 25 miles of me quoted $1,100 and $1,300. Then I called someone 75 miles away, and he quoted me $400 to install a sunroof from another Explorer. So I went to eBay, got one out of a 1997 Explorer from a Mustang dealer in Georgia, and the overhead console from oriion_1998 on this site for the moonroof controls, and will soon have myself a moonroof.

Now the tough part is convincing myself to pay someone else $400 for making a cut with a jig saw, installing some weatehr stripping, and some wires. Gosh I love to learn and try new things......

But as I always say, "There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity." Thus I'll be driving 75 miles this weekend.

How about installing just glass on the roof? Kinda like a T-Top that does not come off. Did you happen to ask about this? (It's a long shot question but, hey, you never know) ;)

good luck getting that passed with any law .. if you jsut had glass on the roof you'd be screwed if you flipped or something ...

No, not a glass roof but just the same size as a regular moon roof but it does not slide open. Kinda like a fixed glass window.

Kinda like the new Maximas have? Runs down the center for the entire length of the roof. I'm not sure if it opens or not. But it would have to slide to the side if it did.

Yes, something like that, Todd. I've had a t-top before from a Camaro and I think its cool to look out and see the moon or the sky while stuck in traffic. Don't care much about openning it, I just want to be able to look out/up.
