I started having water leaking from the mini overhead console on my 2010 about 6 months ago. I ssumed that the moon roof system was the culprit. I finally pulled the headliner to see if I could fix the moon roof. Much to my surprise, the root cause was a leak at the attaching bolt of the satellite antenna. I pulled the antenna out and put silicone sealant on the gasket which will hopefully fix the issue.

Recently bought a used 2006 & noticed this problem after a hard rain. Will be taking it in to get the drain mods per TSB 07-20-6. I know someone posted the TSB previously but I could not access the link. Found this link which does not contain the full TSB but does show the new drain routing on page 3 of the PDF. Will report back on the results of the TSB.

I bought my 2006 E.B. Ford Explorer new it has just in the past 4 months started with this same problem. Does Ford dealerships fix the problem for free due to this TSB? I'm not familiar with TSB's!

No they won't fix it for free. I even called Ford and they brushed me off saying b/c i was out of warranty there was nothing they could do.
I was pissed off.

I have an 06 Eddie Bauer with only 32,000 miles on it (it is not my daily driver, only when i pull my camper or long trips etc..). I kept it in the garage for a few years and never noticed anything. I parked it outside and we had bad weather for a couple of weeks. I got in it and noticed a nasty smell, the seat legs were rusted and Water was pouring from the map light and I had stains in several places on the head liner.

I just e-mailed
oz64cobra01@yahoo.com
I hope he can help me out.

yes I emailed him also hoping to hear back but havent so far if you happen to hear could you post here what you find out and I will do the same

Tonia, I haven't heard back from him either. I will let you know if and when I do.

Tonia, I got a reply..."Hey there Thomas,#
I'm not at home right now, on a business trip. As soon as I get home next Friday I'll send you the info from my computer."

Tonia, he e-mailed me the information. Send me an e-mail at bo.rickle@gmail.com and I will forward the pics, instructions and the power point.

Thanks to oz64cobra01 for the information!!!

Water Leak

email sent and ty so much

This happened to my Dads06 Limited just his past weekend.
It has rained since, but it has not leaked again.
If someone could email me the 'fix' that would be very appreciated!

I emailed Bo above, to see if he could send them to me too.

I had this problem for years, had it fixed multiple times. Finally went to a different dealership, Beach Ford in Virginia Beach, VA, they found that a drain line was clogged. They fixed this and I have not had a single leak since, including hurricanes and nor'easters. Was not free, but not exorbitantly expensive.

Water leaking from overhead console.

My 08 Explorer started leaking yesterday after a very hard rain storm. I was driving and water started dripping from map light on driver side, I was upset and had water dripping all over the shifter and going in the cup holders.

I couldn't do anything at the time, it finally stopped dripping. When I got home I opened the sun roof and saw no water in the front channel where the drains are in both front corners. I did clean a little dirt from both corners, and then blew out both drains with my air compressor.

I then used a small pitcher and poured water in both corners near the drain, my wife watched and the water came out of both drains inside the front doors. I could not see the rear drains but I blew air where I thought they would be.

I poured water in the back of the sun roof and it also drained from under the rear doors, it rained just as heavy today. I went out after it stopped and pulled the front console down and it was dry inside there.

Maybe all is well for awhile, I hope ! I heard that water can also come in from the satellite antenna ?

This is an old post, but a new problem for me since we just bought a used 06 explorer.

The fix is electrical duct seal. There is a gap between the roof sheet metal and the plastic frame/casing/tray assembly for the sunroof. The tray does a great job collecting small leaks and draining them out the drain holes. The problem for me was that if the truck were parked at any angle/incline during a rainstorm, not all of the water would drain out. When we would get in and take off, some of the water would slosh up out of the tray before it had a chance to drain. It was finding it's way through that gap, which is directly about the overhead console, and the map light switch is the low point drain.

Therefore, stuff some duct seal into that gap and the problem is gone. Worked for me!

This is not the only place water can get in, obviously, but it is a factory flaw that caused brand new explorers to leak. So, might be worth it for you to start here. Also, the sloshing factor may explain why it's hard to recreate the leak on demand.

I ended up fixing this myself. When parked on level surface, the drain holes work fine. If on an incline, however, forwards or back, water leaks. Poor sunroof design. In the front, there is a gap large enough for me to stick the tip of my finger in between the roof sheet metal and the sunroof assembly. And on either side of the front drain holes, there is an area where the water will seep between fittings and leak into the dome light. It will continue to happen even if the drain holes are clean and attached.

I took my silicone caulk (the good stuff by GE) and caulked both areas. Inside of the truck smelled like ass for a few days but no more leaks. Just make sure not to accidentally go near the drain holes. No more leaks.

I'm having the same problems, with 2006 Eddie Bauer explorer with factory sunroof.
Does anybody have any pics of how they fixed the leak ? My leak is overhead console dome light area.
Thanks.

First try using those craft pipe cleaners and GENTLY thread them into the two drain holes on either side of the two front corners of the sunroof. Pour a little water in the area and they should be draining freely out under the A-pillar by the front door hinges.

If that doesn't work, you're going to have to blow compressed air through them to open them up. If the drain tubes got disconnected, you'll need to remove the sun visors and drop the head liner in the corners to reconnect them. All fairly easy fixes.

drain tubes are working fine .
just checked em'

Yeah my first guess would have been the sunroof.

In my case water seemed to be entering through one of the roof rack threaded inserts.

I removed the roof rack, applied some RTV around every one of the threaded inserts, onto the threads of the bolts. Then after I bolted the roof rack back in, applied a thin layer over top/around of each bolt head.

That was this past winter and so far have not had any more water coming from the map light console.
