Water Temp sensor location

hey guys, well i bought an after market water temp gauge and i cant seem to find a place to install the sensor. i found my stock location but i dont want to just disconnect the original one. is there another place where i can install another temperature sensor?

On both our '92 X and the 78 Van I installed the coolant temp sending unit in the heater hose right as it comes out of the intake. Taking the reading from there will give you the coolant temp right when it leave the engine.

If your sending unit is a 1 wire unit don't forget to ground the sending unit.

They make adapters so you can do this..
Autometer part 2280 is an example.. It even has a place for the ground wire.

its about $30 from summit.

Another option is to make your own.. Here is one we made for a friends f-150.

You can see we used a hose clamp to hold the ground wire onto the black pipe coupler.

On the Van I used a "T" and put in a bushing on the middle connector (bushing to 1/8 npt) and the hose adapters were on either end. I didn't need to drill into the fitting that way..

I thought about tapping into the metal housing after the thermostat:

It the heater hose a better location for the 4.0 OHV?
