Weird transfer case problem

I am working on a 2001 4dr Ford explorer XLT automatic electronic shift transfer case(4x4 auto, 4x4, 4x4 Low). The vehicle when driving is fine, but when at a stop with the brake applied and in gear, the vehicle bumps repeatedly until the brake is let off. Also when the engine is off or in park the vehicle can be pushed.

I have been trying to research this and the best I can come up with is a bad viscous coupler. I do not understand if the VC is between the front drive shaft or the rear driveshaft and if there is a direct connection from the output shaft to one of the shafts, why do I have a neutral condition. Are there speed sensors going bad on the input and/or the output of the tcase?

I have not tried to brown wire mod, pull front driveshaft, or pull down the shift motor.

I am also having difficulty identifying the transfer case definitively. All the tcases I have seen have a round connection where this one seems to flareto connect directly to the transmission.

Any help would be appreciated.

Got it! I had a friend look at it with me in drive, brake applied. The rear passenger axle will spin then stop, spin and stop, etc.

I have never had an axle fail like this. Usually the vehicle just won't move.

Say again ?

I have been trying to find the part and it seems that the id tag has the wrong year, or they 2002 parts on this one. It has the cv joint rear axles.

When we tested it, I observed the axle turn, stop, turn stop, etc. That was the bumping sensation from the rear. It was slipping inside the joint at the tire. The boot is obviously torn and when I get it off, I will take pictures.

It also explains the neutral condition as there is no resistance on one wheel.

I am glad that it is not a transfer case. although I did learn that this one does not have a vc. From my understanding that was for the AWD models.

When ever I have had a cv joint fail, it usually is broke straight in two parts and is slapping around with no vehicle movement.
