My wife was driving us home from shopping yesterday, and she went to pass a car. She stepped on the gas, and I heard a very loud clunk, twice.

Dash lit up, and said check manual. It only had a wrench in the middle of the gauges down by the middle section. (It's a platinum)

The CPU put us in limp mode, and we made it home. I got in it to see what's going on, and the wrench was gone, so I drove it down the street, but shifting between gears is very abrupt. I stepped on the gas and the shift between 2nd and 3rd made another loud bang, and wrench came back for a visit yet again. Limped back to the driveway.

I suppose I should have it towed...6k miles on it. Bummer, but **** happens.

I'll keep y'all posted what it turns out to be.

In the early turbo models it wasn't uncommon for one of the turbo hoses to come off which resulted in power loss. In all cases it was due to the clamps not being tightened enough. I doubt that is the same issue you are having. I don't recall those posts indicating any "bang" noise. As blwnsmoke said, have it towed to the dealership to avoid any possible damage.

That sucks...Thanks for keeping us posted...

Im sitting in a parking lot waiting for a tow truck.

Transmission let go.

Dont think so. Even worse, I couldnt call Ford Roadside Assistance from my cellphone. Its not like its some crazy off brand. Its an iPhone on the AT&T network in San Antonio. I had to call my office and get them to call and report my need.

Its definitely tye transmission. 3rd, 5th and reverse are out. I tried driving to the dealer because roadside Assistance is now taking over 3 hours to get to me. Im never using them again.

I think this is the 1st if not 2nd transmission fsilure. They are built very well and is not something that is common at all. The PTU is a different story but as you said, you are out gears now.

Keep us posted.. I am sure they will do a tear down to see what failed.

How did you make out? Keep us posted. Maybe we can learn something from this. Something about breaking the new explorers in?....

Oh my God. Well, Ive fired Ford Roadside subcontractor, drove my explorer until it finally completely broke down about a mile closer to the dealer, and threw the keys in it and walked away.

After being told an ETA of 12:29pm, from Ford subcontract towing co, I patiently waited, and had my wife and kids cone meet me. At 12:45, I called and dispatcher told me he was 10 minutes out. At 1:20, I called back again fearing he was lost. The put me on hold, then gave me driver's number. Called him, and he tells me he is on way to pick up another car, and has to drop it off and then he will get me. He asked where I was. I told him the mall Im at, and he says - oh Im not from here, I just moved here. Okay, so I asked if he knew where he was taking it? He tells me a dealership over 100 miles away. I blew up! Covert Ford NE of Austin, and Im in San Antonio 5 miles from the dealer I bought it from? I told him nevermind. I lost it. I got in the explorer and drove it till it stopped. Then I called my dealership direct and lit into them. They told me they would get their tow service and be there in 30 minutes, so I dropped the keys in the vehicle and left. At this point, I hope someone steals it and burns it to the ground. Ive bought 14 Fords in the past 5 years. Im not mad it broke down. **** happens. But the service here is almost beyond forgiveness.

Well, I mean, this is my second Explorer Ecoboost Sport drivetrain, and I am on my second SHO too, so I should have a fairly good grasp for break in. Probably close to the most experience here for a private owner of these vehicles anyway. I've had 3 GT500s to break in and two 5.0s, and a Raptor as well. No problems with any other vehicles, so really I think the breaking part was just my time. I HOPE it's a problem they can identify and it be a one time fix for sure. Dealer now has possession and I'm safe at home. That idiot tow truck driver refused to take it to a closer dealer. He told me that would have to be handled by Ford Roadside and to call them before he got there, but as I said earlier, I couldn't dial the number from my cell phone. I couldn't believe the series of events today. I was gonna drop off the explorer and leave it and forget it and take the wife and kids to Sea World and ride some rides. Now the day is lost and so is their holiday as is the day I took off from work.

Wow. Looking forward to hearing what happened. Our Platinum is just a month old and 1500 miles.

The sad thing is they all contract out to the cheapest company and this is the type of crap we have to go through when you get the bottom of the barrel.

My F350 had broke down or so I thought when it was about 10 degrees out.. They were telling me 3-4 hours before someone could get to me. Let the truck sit for a while and the gelled fuel thawed and on my way I went. All I could think of was how freezing I was going to be if I had to sit there for 3-4 hours.

I will of course let everyone know, but one break in 1000 units doesn't make a design flaw or a weak part, and this transmission engine drivetrain has been bulletproof in a stock setup for 5 years now, so if you are getting worried seeing this, I would say don't get flustered. These are wonderful vehicles and it just happened to be my turn to get a weak part. It's life.

Man, sorry about your luck. When it rains it pours.

Also, I think the post I quoted above says a lot. Some people have an issue and all of a sudden the vehicle and brand are completely junk. You know that there's always going to be a bad one once in a while. Let's hope Ford takes care of you the right way.

theres no real break in period, as long as you don't floor it for a minute straight or something. Sounds like it just F'd up.

I'm on my 6th Explorer. 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2014 and now 2016. The Previous generation Explorers had known transmission problems. I had a problem with the transmission in all 4 of those vehicles. 2 complete replacements, torque converters and valve bodies.

I just turned in the 2014 with 26,000 miles and never had a bit of problem. Hopefully the transmissions in this generation have improved tremendously. The 2016 only has 280 miles so far, so time tell on it.

The Manual still references a "break-in" period.

then you would be surprised how the people transporting the vehicles treat them before delivery and how they don't fail from catastrophic failures more often related to abuse :D. I just wouldn't drive them under high load for extended periods of time is what the manual says I think.

This is the general idea in the link below, if a manufacture still has an odd procedure to break in a vehicle I would stay far away from it
