What are the largest tires i can fit on an 01 explorer sport

I have an 01 explorer sport 4x4 that is completely stock. I am thinking about putting some bigger more aggressive tires on it and was wondering what the largest size that would fit on the stock set up. I've been told that with wheel spacers 285/75/16's would fit but not sure how true that is.
