1997 explorer xlt manual
the clutch/slave cyl is going out in my 1997 explorer, sohc v6, manual, it is also rhd and is an australian spec model, have been trying to find out if it has a 9-10 inch clutch size or the 10 somthing inch size that the newer sohc manual trans had?
VIN: 1FMDU34X1VZB59977
will add pictures
am trying to find a clutch that ships from australia, I do have family in the us that can mail me parts but this company looks to be selling Exedy clutch kits for these explorers, but they all seem to be the smaller size for the old ohvs, even the 2000-2001 kit, are one of these kits correct for mine? or are they for the 97s that have the ohv.

thanks for any help guys!

Should be 10.125” clutch with self adjusting pressure plate after 01/97 build date

Can you remove inspection cover and have a look at the clutch?

I can show you the difference between the early 10” up to 12/96 clutch and the larger 10.25 self adjuster made from 01/97 after

its built may 97 so i agree, will the 250mm 23t etc 97-99 clutch kit there fit?
ill take a look at that later today at work.
not sure if this aussie clutch company realises theres a couple engine options.

definitely oem slave/clutch, only has 175k km (110k miles)
don't think it should be rusty like that haha, I live on the beach so that's not surprising
its not super broken, I can still limp it around town until the parts get here

uppon closer inspection of the pressure plate, and with a lot of help from this thread, this appears to be the smaller clutch from the ohv v6 with the older trans, identical pressure plate to the luk 07096 rep set for the 93-96s.
it also advised that the luk 07139 has the bigger 10 1/8 inch plate, and fit any of the older ohv motors as well as the new sohc ones with any of the mazda trans, going to go with that.
i suspect it has the older trans fitted? dont see why a 3/97 built date sohc would have that clutch, it is an export model tho.
this does not supprise me, this truck was made in louisville like all the second gen explorers, but specd slightly differant, and right hand drive obviously, it has the borg warner 4405 t case, a full time 4x4/awd t case, neither of my explorers in oregon had that (98, 99).

97 was first year of sohc
So some strange things happened
The clutch got larger in 98 and by 2001 the ohv no longer existed
The sohc has a 8 bolt crank, the ohv had 6 bolts until 1998, then it too got thr 8 bolt crank. So you can install a 98-11 sohc flywheel and the large
Clutch on a ohv engine.

Whenever i replace a clutch on a ohv I use a 2004 ranger sohc clutch, the larger one with the self adjusting pressure plate. You get a longer life and better performance for this setup.

The 8 bolt sohc flywheel can be used behind the ohv to make this clutch work, however it is also very simple to remove the locating pins from the flywheel and use the larger clutch to mark the hole locations, drill 6 holes and tap them… now you can put the larger clutch on any old ohv flywheel

Whatever you do, I have been building these trucks many years. Whatever you do you must use all new hydraulics and only luk brand components

yeah that makes sense haha, mine has the sohc i know that 100% but i think it has the M5OD-R1 from the ohvs but on the sohc, my theory at least, im going to replace all the hydraulics and the such, im also going to get a lightweight flywheel from gripforce its a 8 bolt.
i am very curious to see if this has a 6 or 8 bolt flywheel currently, wouldn't be surprised either way.
does luk make the best slave/master cyl? do they make one thats prefilled? been looking on rockauto but cant find any prefilled from luk, my google results are always ****ed because its searching for Australian results.

Luk hydraulics only
I have not been able to get a luk pre bled system no
I have to assemble and bleed

I will only install luk clutches as well

All sohc engines have 8 bolt crank

The ohv and sohc shared transmissions 97-2000, they are basically the same engine block underneath
