What did I break?

My '02 4x4 suddenly acquired a loud grinding/scraping noise from my right rear wheel. When I got the wheel off I found that metal was being shaved from the inside of the wheel and I can move the entire axle, rotor and hub up and down several inches (the rotor and hub seem to be secure to the axle.) What broke?

Probably the bearing. There are write-ups on the site that describe how to change them. They are a bit pricey though.
