Anyone have any idea why there is a hose that leads from the intake tube over to the oil filler neck? I'm constructing a custom intake and I'm trying to figure out if its really needed or not, thanks.

That is part of the PCV system you definately need that hose. Without it you will suck unfiltered air into the crankcase and then through the PCV valve into the intake manifold.

Im doing the same thing! I bought a hole drill to drill into my new intake pipe... then I got a small male/male sprinker adapter to connect to the oil thingie. Havent tested it out yet though... ALSO! Ive heard of people using small K&N filters instead of connecting to the intake pipe... I dont think its smog legal... but if you doing this... its prolly not anyways. :)
