Started using Mobil1 synthetic when I bought my X after reading all the positive comments about it here.

sounds like i am the only one to use castrol gtx...i started using castrol gtx 10/30-10/40 when it first came out and have had no problems with it at all...i also use the fram oil filters...i guess i am still old school and cheap...

You aren't the only one, my dad has been using this combo since they bought their expo back in 93. When the valve cover gaskets had to be replace the mechanic asked if it had a new engine because there was no sludge or anything on the rockers.

... let's here it for the old school...:D

...yea, after several years of replacing valve cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets, and at the same time usually putting in hi performance oil pumps, i had the same results...clean as a whistle... gtx ended my years of sludge...;)

Dino oil.

Any brand except Pennzoil.

Pennzoil makes the best mid level synthetic oil, only the Amsoil level products are better.

Castrol High mileage 10-40,My exploder has over 150k,and I want keep it going awhile longer,I also add a quart of Rislone with every change, dont know if it helps, but it couldnt hurt.{kind of like chicken soup}:exp:

i have heard a lot of bellyaching about amsoil, but it's never given me a problem. i don't wait the 2 or 3 hundred thousand miles before oil changes, but i'll go 6, 7500.....

$5.00 Oil Change

The local Ford dealer charges $5.00 for oil, lube, filter, tire rotation, and of couse the inspection of stuff you should do to your car which is where they really make money.

You get a factory filter and semi-synthetic oil.

Bought from Enterprise Car Rental/Sales 12/01 24,000 miles
feed Her Motorcraft Syn. Blend 5w30 and an FL1A every 3,000 till 84,000/ aftermkt warrany ran out. Changed to Mobil 1 Full Sny. Truck/SUV and an FL1A every 5000. She currently has 141,500 and still runs strong as ever. (Knock on Wood)/Knuckles on Head

I also run Full Sny Gear Oils the the differentials

Motorcraft Synblend 5w30 $2.10 x 5qts = $ 10.50 + $4.00 MC filter = $14.50 every 3000
60,000divided by 3000 = 20 oil changes x $14.50 = $290 for 20 oil changes

Mobil 1 Full Syn 5w30 5qts/$19.96 + $4.50 MC filter = $24.46 every 5000
60,000 divided by 5000 = 12 oil changes x $24.46 = $293.52 for 12 oil changes

with the full Syn I do see the oil coming out cleaner even after 5000 miles than the Blend only after 3000 miles

I believe that the best answer is, "Buy a better air filter." More dirt gets into the engine through the air filter, than oil filtering is important. Regards,

I live in California also. Where is this dealership?

I use Royal Purple + K&N Filter. My local corner mechanic charges $15 for labor & disposal of used oil & filter. I supply the parts.

Eastbay - about 50 miles east of San Francisco

I live in San Francisco.

Give it up.

My last oil change in the Mountaineer was from San Mateo's Veracom Ford. $9.95 coupon special. 6 qts Motorcraft Synthetic & Motorcraft Filter.

Livermore Ford (Home of the $5.00 oil change as advertised on their shuttle) Not sure of the requirements - I've spent a $h!tload of money there on my 2005 Crown Vic and my 98 Mustang.

Thanks. I'll surely try to remember that when it's time for my next oil change. Livermore is almost an hour away from SF. In my Mountaineer, I can round that up to (at least 6 gallons of gas @ $3.70 per gallon) + $4 toll = $26.20. San Francisco & San Mateo Ford both charge about $36.95. If I time it right, I can get a cheap oil change as I come back from a road trip on the I-5. Yeah, it could work out, but only when I'm coming home from road trips (which is when I could actually use it). Otherwise, the 2.5 hour drive isn't really worth it to save $5 by spending $5. I wonder what else they could do for a low price.
