No, not hair plugs....spark plugs..

I am running +4's at the moment and so far I am not impressed. I have also read MANY stories of them coming apart.

Since I can never get a straight story from any auto parts shop I thought I would let everyone give their opinion as to what is the best plug for our Explorers.

Thanks guys.

Im using the stock ones and they have 68 thousand miles on them. They are going to be replaced with more new stock ones around 75 or 80 thousand miles.

I think its due for it since my mpg is only 14.8 or 14.9

IMO The OE plug is almost always best!!!

I'm running the motorcraft platinum plugs right now. They work just great.

Whatever brand of spark plug my employer sells - currently Bosch. If the engine decal recommends platinums, it gets platinums - if not, coppers.

I really shy away from "gimmicky" plugs. Any extra electrodes or gewgaws in the way tend to shroud the spark from the air/fuel charge. If anyone wants to get **** about spark plugs, youll be better off "indexing" the ground electrodes so that they are between the centre electrode and the roof of the combustion chamber (old racers trick).

OE

Interesting....so far OE plugs are the choice...

i use regular bosch plugs, but im not partial to them really. i would just steer clear of anything thats a gimmick, like the +4's, splitfires, etc.

I've used the Bosch +4's and I didn't notice any mpg difference over the regular platinums. My choice is the regular Bosch platinums.

+4s Stand for +4 more dollars

I just put in OEM platinums today. Can't say my fingers enjoyed it though. A friend of mine who is a mechanic said the +4s are a gimmick. Despite the four posts there will always be one grounded spark that is "caught" and there is no other way to put it. He said open the gap a bit (shortens plug life) but worth it. And platinums only last longer, they fire the same as copper. I opened mine to .058 from .054--Lord knows if it will make a difference to me but I just felt like trying...:mattmoon:

Use regular plugs and stay away from all that splitfire and crap. They don't actually have the spark of a regular plug. We have tested this with our drag car and regular cheap autolite plugs burn the fuel more completely than any other. All others caused us to run rich.

Regular Motorcraft platinums...they're what's recommended.

ihave been using splitfire's in my 93 since they were first introduced how ever many years ago (94 i think?) had roughly 20,000 miles @ that time, now have 60,000. since installing them - mileage didn't go up - mileage didn't go down - performance didn't go up - performance didn't go down, so all in all it's 40,000 miles later my wallet is X # of dollars lighter for what extra i paid for them @ the time and i'm replacing them this weekend w/ OE platniums (which the only reason i'm spending the extra for plat's is cause i've convinced myself that they will last longer), as for plus 4's - i think a racing buddy of mine put it best when he asked me "have you ever seen a lightnin bolt hit in four places @ the same time?":hammer:
