I just bought a 2nd generation explorer. A 99 v8. I have had my beloved 91 for 22 years and while it will be sad to let it go, it is time. I have had it listed for sale but no getting much interest, so I'm thinking of sending it to a junk yard. Before I do, I wanted to ask your suggestions on what to keep. For example, I'll probably keep the battery box to either do a second battery in the new ex or a battery in a boat to run a trolling motor. I'll obviously take aftermarket stuff like stereo etc. But is there anything else that is compatible between 1st and 2nd gens that I should hang onto as a spare part or replacement? The old ex is in great shape except for no tranny. The new one is running well but disgustingly dirty. I've contemplated swapping the carpet if they are the same size. The new one is grey and old is tan, but at least its clean....

Not an expert, but I think there's quite a bit that will swap between the 1st and 2nd gens, even if they look different. Seats should swap even if you have to use the track from the Ex you're swapping into, but I think the floor pan is the same so they should be a direct bolt-in. Your carpets should swap. I know the floors are the same size and shape in the rear cargo area. I think they're the same basic platform. Obvious differences are the engine/trans, sheet metal, and front suspension(?).

Power steering rack?

Shackles, possibly? Leaf pack, if it's still good?

How about the rear axle shafts? if you lose a rear bearing it'll eat into the axle shaft.. At least I "think" they are the same...

All excellent ideas, I especially liked the axle shaft idea from Maniak. I was about to strip it down and got a call from someone that wanted to buy it so I didn't take anything. Now on to the build for the second generation Explorer. Can't wait.
