I'm having issues with my transmission which I believe is a broken Intermediate Band (not shifting from 2nd-3rd without letting off gas). The transmission has about 180k miles on it, so rather than fix it I'm considering replacing with another used or re manufactured tranny.

I know there were issues with these, especially the early model year 2002's.

What model years would work as a replacement? I believe I have a 5r55w - but I've also seen S and N transmissions.

Can anybody tell me which model years or specific transmissions will work as a substitute?

Vehicle: 2002 Explorer, v6 4.0, 4WD, 4-door

Pretty sure you are right about the W, being an 02. Have you checked into the Servos? Known to cause your exact problem. Search for the Redesigned servos with the o-rings. Run about $200 for both servos. Plus you dont have to pull the trans.

Duranged - thanks for the response. Are the servos the same thing or different than the Solenoids? I had been considering trying to replace the solenoid pack first to see if that solves my issues - before dropping the whole transmission.

The codes I'm getting are 0733 and 0745 which have to do with Solenoid pack, but there is a TSB (http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/timnoll/2008-12-26_151855_tsb04-24-17.pdf ) that mentions this exact problem and says it is sometimes caused by the intermediate band. I do have 3rd gear (once I"m able to get it to shift) so I'm having a hard time believing the band is broken - but it could be.

The Servos are on the outside, of the passenger side of the trans and can be changed without dropping the pan or the whole trans, let me see if I can throw ya a couple links.

That should give a bit of info. If the last link doesn't work, go to the transmission section on here and go to search and just put servo.
90% of the 5r55(e,s,w) are pretty close in how theyre assembled and operate. If you need any help sifting through that just let me know. Been a long long day or Id usually type out a book for ya.

Also on the band, Its a possibility still, I don't remember exactly how to check without opening it up, I *think* if you can manually downshift at appropriate speeds and the engine slows down the vehicle, then the band is still good. *IF Im remembering right* try to look it up. The truck is designed not to let an actual downshift happen if the speed is too high for a preset limit for the selected manual gear.

Edit-- Found another thread with some info on checking the band.

Edit again, Sorry about the scrib link, Didnt realize they wanted money to read past the first page, But, the little info on the first page is helpful.

Found another site with the whole Scrib document available to view.
