I have a new to me 1996 XLT 4.0L 4x4. I was told to look under the hood for a decal to tell me what refrigerant to use? I can't find a thing so I was wondering what my explorer uses R12 or R134a? It was built 12/95. The A/c cycles a lot and it does not get very cold. I was told to add some refrigerant to it to recharge it but sure don't want to mix them. The local shops want $199 to check and charge the system and More if the find something wrong. I would rather buy some, top it off and see how it does before I spend that. Any help is appreciated! Thanks !

134a. It was mandated by the federal government for all cars starting in '94 .
