1992 Explorer XLT
Just curious about which style of X we all have. What are good/bad qualities about the different styles. What model is best for off roading? Older or newer?

I have a 92 I like it becase it is easy to get parts for the only bad quality I can think of is the auto trannys

I agree. The only problem I have had with my '92 is the auto tranny. It works great for off-roading.

I have one of my ex's set up for off roading but the price to maintain is too high for me:eek:

Sell that sweet 93 and buy one.:D

Not until I graduate College (Dec. 2003)
But at that point, I think I will end up getting a newer Mustang, I miss the handling of a car!

I wish I had a 96 v8 AWD, if i could get rid of my xlt i would get the LTD with a v8.

I have a 95 . love it. only thing bad is that i can't get a lift for it or i would have it on there.

2001 sport... the best looking X yet

I'd have to say the best model for hard wheeling (if there is one) is the '94 with the towing package. You get a tranny cooler that will save your tranny. You get all the skid plates you need. Plus it's easy to get parts and mods. Dana 35 in front and Ford 8.8 in the rear; talk about easy to find parts!

I think if I could start over, I'd get a sport with the 5-speed. I haven't had ANY problems with my tranny (even after 165,000 miles) but the shorter wheelbase and the lower maintenance tranny would give me more confidence.

'91, and it performs well. I like the look of it (even if it is a little boxy, just throw a pre-runner bumper on there), and it works just good enough :D

I wish I had a 5.0, and I agree with RoadExplorer, I like the looks of those '01 Sports.

'91-'94 Are the best for off-roading
Everything else just looks better :D

I agree.

1991

I just got my 1991 xlt
It runs like it was new
My only problems were the sending unit inlet tube was rusted thru and the gas tank outer locking ring rusted (necessating a tank change)

And of course the rear liftgate rusted thru around the bottom.

Other than that I Love It!!!
:)

I have a 97 Mountaineer with the 5.0 AWD. The only thing I wish ford would have done is put a two speed t-case behind the V8. I drove a couple of V6 Ex's and just did not like the lack of power.

My 93' Explorer sport has been in the family since It left the Ford lot the first time. 200,000+ miles with only one $500.00 manual transmission repair to the list other than new tires, oil chages, cooling system maintainence, and other normal upkeep. At 200,000 miles it still looks and runs like brand new, except some minor interior scuffs (armwrest support broke, shifter knob loose, and liner under dashboard loose from screws). Not bad for an almost 10 year old truck.

thats right Jason. we beat Leesville. we beat most teams. State chaps!
