I just got a 94 xlt v6 4x4 with 200,000 miles is it a sohc or ohc engine on these models. What probles should I look for with this many miles, already found some oil drip under the bottom front towards the oil pan n tranny.

The A4LD trans will be the weak link, look through the "A4LD Diary" threads. Other than that just general maintenance is needed. Most vehicles with that kind of mileage need a lot of neglected parts. Start with a tune up. Welcome and good luck.

engine is an ohv: overhead valve design, not sohc or ohc

sohc and ohv were avaialbe in the explorers, however the sohc did not debut until 97

my 94 had over 110k miles on it before I broke/killed it

Gotcha ,hopefully she will last me through the winter so I can work on her during the summer.I know she needs the obvious like shocks, springs and everything inbetween. When I first drove it home felt like the right front wheel was wobbley I thought maybe since it sat for a while, the wheel isn't bent so I know its something else shocks?

My 94 has 151k.
I haven't really driven it yet though.
I have a hell of a wobble up front, but I know it's the 2 front tires.

Check out the front bearings, they become more loose over time. Tighten the bearings some.

My 94 explorer has 171k on it with original engine and tranny, although My tranny is starting to act up it's been great. But the story's i heard out of them trannys in the explorers, i think 171k on the same trannys is pretty good.

164,000 miles...not a single issue ~grinz n crosses fingerz~

I sold my 1994 sport at 190K about 10 months ago... as far as I know, its still going strong. Just keep up with it and it'll last for a good long time. My brother-in-law had the same one as me, but had tranny problems... I had my tranny fluid flushed at inspection time every year just to be on the safe side.

I got 24.15 MPG with the still original motor and tranny.

94 Eddie Bauer Ex with 242K + Miles. Yes I do tow a 3500 lb Boat, sometimes 900 miles at a time. She doesn't like that too much. :(

My orginal 4.0 made it to 323,000 miles. I have since swaped in a different 4.0.

276,000 miles on mine. I have the original A4LD tranny, and have only recently (within the last month) had any issues with the tranny (other than the vacuum modulator, which technically is an accessory). I tow with it as well.

Good luck!

Mike

I'd be happy If i got 50,000 miles out of her, being I only drive 5-6 miles round trip to work and would only be used in the winter.

Running strong at 190,000 with occasional towing and wheeling

You guys are giving me hope! :)

"JUST" 143k and still going pretty strong.

I recently bought a 92 with 230+ miles and it runs better than my 94 with only 80k kinda odd but i can't complain. As long as this one holds out long enough for me to fix the 94.
