Wheels not even spinning

I had a very bad experience last week, as my explorer 2016 XLT got stuck in dune during my weekend trip.
I had put all my efforts to move the car out of the situation. But went in wein. So i have to get some tech advise and tips on this.

I have put the transmission to S and kept the mode as sand. But once the car got stuck, no wheels were spinning on whatever I do. Any idea or thoughts on this?

The Owner's Manual suggests that turning Traction Control OFF may help. Did you try that?

That's not the impression I got when reading the Manual. When it talks about 'Sand' mode it says that turning OFF Traction Control may help. That seems to suggest that you have to turn it OFF yourself.
