I'm wanting to paint my bumpers (not the chrome parts) but just the top and bottom where they are that ugly factory color... im wanting to paint them all black like (rydinhigh) has done to his. I just want mine done professionally cause im not too good with painting.. so how much do u think it would cost and where could i go to get something like that done.. also how long do you think it would take?

Time to start calling paint and body shops ;)

Maaco would probably charge 100-150 per bumper. Take about a day, easier if you take them the bumper w/o the truck.

Other paint/body shops will probably charge 150-200% of that depending on the place.

it would be so much easier and cheaper to just use the rattle can bumper black paint. take it all off, wash well with a paint prep wash, and spray away. i cant remember who makes the stuff, but you can find it at autozone/walmart/etc. it is quite durable.

Duplicolor.

lightly sand and use primer first. They have the primer in grey and black.

yea, sorry i left out a few steps. :D

just scuff them up with a 120 grit sanding pad. you can get them in the home paint section of walmart.

What is the temperature there in Indy? Those rattle cans don't stick well if the temp is too low. I would wait until spring/summer time to do this.

I did mine at 60-65 degree weather and its peeling right now at the edges.

I usually use 400.

My garage stays about 10-20 degrees warmer than the outside temp, and I paint stuff using a rattle can in the winter all the time, and everything comes out fine. Only time I avoid painting is if it's 10-20 degrees out, because that means it'll only be 30-40 degrees in my garage.

for under $30, you can slap one of those on a propane bottle and have room temp. garage. i have the cheapest single burner unit and it will keep my 2car garage at 70 degrees no matter what the temps are outside.

of course, he wants to do this in the summer so the whole "painting while cold" point is moot. :)

i would use krylon fusion for plastic..hold's up like nothing else

Great idea while using spraypaint :nono:

actually, it is. ive used mine all the time. keep in mind, the mr. heater isnt an open flame. it poses no danger unless you directly spray the heater. if you have fumes thick enough in a garage to ignite/explode, then a) you cant breath and b) you just used about 20 cans in a confined area. proper ventalation with heat is the key.

The fumes themselves aren't going to ignite, it takes something much more than that.

at the last meet in our area, i was talking to mike (rydinhigh) about that, and he told me that he just took all the trim off and used bumper paint (he said he got it at pep boys or someplace like that) and sprayed it on.

The key to painting, especially with rattle can, is PREP. The prep work is even more important than the painting itself.

wow look at all you guys talking about me and not inviting me. :p

Here is what I did for mine.

1. Remove all bumper trim. The rear pads have clips that need to be compressed and the pulled out. The rear sides have a screw by the tires, a screw on the backside and they slide out by pulling up and out. The front top pad has the clips that need to be compressed and pulled out. The lower valence has 8mm (i believe) bolts that need to get undone. After you undo all the bolts (approx 10 of them) the lower valence will come off.

2. I then took a hose and some soap and water to all of the trim pieces to get the gunk off of them. After they dried I used rubbing alcohol and a lint free towel to clean them even more.

3. Lightly sand all of the trim pieces and then I used a lint free towel to get all of the sandings off.

4. I got 4 cans of glossy black bumper and trim paint (with this you dont need primer or clear coat) from pep boys for about $6 a can.

5. I lightly sprayed all of the trim pieces and let them dry for about 25 mins. (make sure to do really light coats otherwise the paint will run). I then repeated this process and got 4 coats on the front pieces and 3 on the rear. It still looks as good as the day I did it 6 months ago.
