Which fuel pump?

02 Explorer XLT V6 (not flex)

Doing a search for a new fuel pump shows me one with a 7 pin connector and 1 with an 8 pin connector. I'd rather not drop the tank first to find out which one I need, and plugging the VIN number into an actual Ford Parts website doesn't seem to net me any more definitive results. Is there an easier way to find out before I drop the tank?

The reason for fuel pump assy replacement is every time I get below a quarter tank, it doesn't want to start until it's cooled down (after it's warmed up), or I put enough fuel in to bring it above a quarter tank, then all is well. I'm getting fuel to the engine, when the fuel level is up tho. It kept blowing fuses each time as well. Just need to remember to keep more than a quarter tank of gas in there.

If I remember correctly the poster bought a fuel pump that had either the 7 or 8 pins in the connector and that did not match his original fuel pump assembly. The connectors were compatible just +/- the one pin. He decided to try the new pump and it worked, so at least in his case it made no difference.

Without checking your vehicle it may not be possible to determine which you have. Ford changes things during the production year and some vehicles get produced one way and others a different way. In my case the difference was the fuel filter on my '01. Some are 3 port and some are 2 port for no particular reason. In my case it was easy to check to see which I had.

Perhaps reading through Ford's 2002 ST TSB's might be helpful, maybe not.

Your first problem, not starting unless 1/4 tank.
I had similar problem, it was a split in the hose between the fuel pump and pressure relief valve inside the fuel tank. When the fuel level is high there is more resistance to pumping fuel through split ( and in my case the split was very hard to see). You need to drop the fuel tank and replace both short hoses connecting pump to hanger outlet.
Your second problem, 7 or 8 pin.
I have a new fuel pump hanger assembly in front of me and there are 7 pins of a possible 8 in place. My hanger assembly is single port out only on 2001 4wd ST. You need to check how many ports out of tank you have, to determine which fuel pump hanger style you need, if you replace. As Koda said Ford changed these fuel systems around so be careful when ordering replacement

I'll make sure to check the hoses as well. Once I've got the tank down, I'll want to give everything the once over twice. Dropping that thing really isn't high on my weekend fun list, so I only want to do it once.

I replaced my fuel pump last year and the Airtex replacement didn't have the same pin count. I installed it anyway and I haven't had a problem with it. Airtex E2348M for 2002 Sport Trac (built on/after March 4, 2002) and 2003. Mine was built 07/02

After another problem before the weekend got here (wouldn't start with 3/4 tank of gas), I'm starting to wonder if there is another problem I'm not seeing. I grabbed an ODB II analyzer and was able to find NO trouble codes, but I was able to download all of this data:

The question is, what does all of this data mean? Is there one thing in particular I should be looking at? This data came from the vehicle running, at idle (up to running temp) and parked.
 






That was too much to read, so my question is have you hooked up a fuel pressure tester to see what amount of fuel pressure you're getting at KOEO and/or KOER?
