whine/noise from R rear wheel?

Hi,
I have posted on this forum before & all have been helpful..so here I am back again. I have 2 Explorers--this is a question about my 95 XLT. Had brakes/Rotors replaced a couple of months ago and shortly after that one of the wheels (at least I think it is coming from a wheel) started making a low pitch whining--rrrrrrrrr- noise. It gets higher pitched the faster I go--sounds similar to how it sounds when driving on pavement in low 4wd (but it's not in 4wd). Had brakes checked they are ok--doesn't seem to be a wheel bearing.

Also it does not coast freely--sort of pulls down, RPM's seem to be higher. In the last couple of days when going 65-75 occasionally it seems like it down shifts out of OD--needle on tach will go up-speedometer needle jumps around. doesn't matter if vehicle is cold/warm--happens randomly,2 times in 30-40 miles.
Don't know if this is related to the same problem or not.

Another thing that started happening about the same time--is the cruise control won't keep an even speed-the throttle goes higher/lower.

Any ideas? I had one mechanic tell me it might be the emergency brake--but he hasn't seen it.

sounds like the brakes are not adjusted correctly... maybe when the rotors were replaced, the interior drums were not properly reset and they are dragging now.....

additional question...

would this cause it to down shift from overdrive? Or could I be causing wear & tear to the transmission? I hope not--cannot afford that right now.

I will have someone else check the brakes and not the guy that fixed them in the first place!

in theory yes, as if the tranny essential thinks you are doing a brakestand, it will act differnetly, and allow more damage to occur in the process...... having brakes stick like that, are forcing parts to wear out faster and operate constantly in a manner in which it wasnt designed for.......

Old thread--but didn't post answer

Hi all,

went back to read some old threads on my 95.
The source of the problem that I posted on was the rear end. It had to be replaced. Bought a used one from a truck salvage in Omaha NE for about $280, and a friend who is a mechanic replaced it for $70.00. Thought I should at least be kind and post the solution and the cost for those that might do a search on the same topic.
