2000 Mountaineer
Hello everyone!

I'm trying to locate a high pitched whine from either the tranny, t-case or the rear end. My truck is a 2000 Mountaineer, 5.0, all wheel drive with about 77K on it. The whine is noticable when cruising and goes away when accelerating. It seems loudest in cold weather. I know it's not belt, pulleys, breaks or wheel bearings. When I hear it, I immediately think transmission but when i vocus on the noise I can't tell if it's coming from the rear axle or what. It's in the drive line somewhere. Can u-joints whine? Does anyone know of a way to isolate the sound? The truck is in good shape and regularly maintained. I'm about ready to change the differential fluid which I'm sure has never been changed (bought the truck used with about 30K on it).
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Gear Whining?

I have this problem also. I thought it might be from the transfer case or equiv. I have an AWD. Mine makes a gear whining noise when accelerating or decelerating at extremely low speeds like in a parking lot. It almost sounds like gear whining going reverse with a manual tranny.
Let me know if you figure out what it is!

Same Noise....

I recently put my 03 explorer xlt with the 4.0 awd tranny in the shop and its intermitten and only does it when its really cold outside. I took it back to the dealer and they told me that they were sure that it was a intake leak. So they replaced the intake and are sure as can be its still there! The dealership said to bring it back and I havent been very willing due to them haveing my truck for almost 2 weeks. Anyways, it only does it when light accellerating in cold weather. If anyone gets some info on theirs being fixed, please shoot me an email!

Thanks,
Rick
