- 2002 ford explorer
I had a rattle in the engine of my 2002 ford explorer 6 cylinder SOHC. They found the balance shaft tensioner was broken. The replaced it and now there is a whirling sound emanating from the same area of the engine after they put it back together. They are both highly qualified ford mechanics, one even sat of the advisory board ( or whatever they call it). They both have never replaced this part as they said it is an unusual occurrence. The noise is quiet at idle but increases with sound as throttle is applied to the motor. The engine has only 58k on it. They seem to be lost as to what is causing this problem. They only replaced the tensioner, nothing else. To me it sound somewhat like a bad bearing noise or a chain that is too tight. They want to take it apart again to see what they can find. Anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this new noise? Thank you
