Who is disappointed with their EX?

They did make the second gen with the OHV.

Yes.

And to the OP, I have had a few Fords and all the issues that have come with them. A 1993 Ranger - 160+K mi, 1999 Explorer 225k+ mi, an 05 Ex 110K + mi, a 96 Escort 135k+ mi, an 05 Escape 130+K mi and a 12 Focus 30k+ mi.

They all have been maintained "well maintained". All, with the exception of the Focus, had ball joints fail, tie rod ends fail, transmitions with issues. I challange you to find me another SUV, be it Ford, Dodge, Chevy, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, in your area with the same miles and year that has NOT had some sort of problem with it.

What you claim is a 6 mile trip to her work, the engine is hardly warmed up unless she sits in traffic. This is likely going to have an adverse effect on the car too.

Also, you are in St Pete, been there myself and I do like the area, I bet you are not more than a 5-7 mile trip in any direction to the ocean. So you have the corosive effects of the salt air. I live in MA and there is heavy salt use on the roads in the winter. And in the warmer months I spend alot of time on Cape Cod, which is by the ocean. Salt(s) take a toll on every part of the car, be it bushings or steel.

So to answer your question, am I dissapointed with my Ex, No way. Do I like huge repair bills, No. But its part of owning a car. S#$& happens. So, if you are such a hater of it get rid of it.

The real test is to see how much you could sell it for and then see what you can buy with that money. If you can buy something within that selling amount that doesn't have similar problems, then you have every right to say the Explorer is less reliable than brand x. I bet you'll find you'd have to go with something with equally expensive issues.

Still rather have the Ex. than any Chrysler SUV. From what I've read and from anecdotal evidence (similar to the OP) they're truly junk.

I'm pretty sure he means that he wishes they still made the second gen explorers, and never swapped to the 3rd, 4th, or 5th gen platforms.

I wouldn't mind that at all, if they made a second gen body with a 5.0 Coyote in it, still kept the 4R70W (maybe swap to a 4R75W or 4R100W), still kept the solid 8.8 in the back, and kept the steel bumpers. It would be nice if they made it a fully boxed frame as well :)

"If it has ***** or wheels it will give you problems"

Simple math tells us that since your Grandmother has *****, and these are her wheels, you can expect double the problems.

..next caller please

Unreliable? Hardly. I've got an '05 xlt. As we speak it has 171k miles on the clock. Original transmission with no sign of failure in the near future, I replaced one wheel bearing less than a month ago, never had a rough idle issue or broken coil spring, and the rear end doesn't make a sound. What's so spectacular about my truck being normal? I put 45k miles on it in the last 6 months. Carrying almost 1,000 lbs of equipment in the back seats. Never needed anything But maintenance. I rarely if ever post here, because i never need to.

Agreed, I would much rather have my 2nd Gen. It had real axles... I don't think Ford is making them to Explore anything... I am waiting to hit the Power Ball or Mega Millions. I will hunt down my old Ex. Although its probably been parted out and scraped by now.

truer words have never been spoken.

Ah. I did apparently misread... but then again, like I said, there is always Arizona if you need a rust free second gen. The second gen platform really did need a lot of improvement... though, I would be inclined to agree that 3rd-5th gen was not the direction I would have chosen to go... but hey, that's what the customers wanted.

Boxed frames though? Totally unnecessary. C channel frames work just as well when designed correctly... Ask Toyota how well their fully boxed frames worked... Also, I keep trying to convince people of this, to little success, but the plastic bumpers on a second gen are actually stronger and more robust than the metal bumpers on the first and second gens. If they had designed metal bumpers thicker than a soup can, then maybe, but yeah... I can permanently bend the metal bumpers on a first or second gen by hand.

I think they shoulda stayed on the Ranger platform. Seems they started that way with the 1st gens, and somewhat with the 2nd, then the 3rd was almost completely different, By the 4th there's no evidence of the Ranger pickups left in there.

While all this has gone on and on and on, the OP seems to have disappeared....

(I just bought my 2002 XLT RWD 4.0 in December. One previous owner, 87,000 miles. Purchased from its original selling and servicing dealer. Yep, it has a few minor issues. We are dealing with them one by one. We are also really enjoying driving and using this vehicle.)

love my explorer even though I had to have the tranny rebuilt. I dont like the repair bills but those will come with any car. a buddy of mine bought a brand new 4runner which needed a new tranny by the time he got it home. and toyotas are never supposed to have problems :)

I would hunt down my old Ex but there's laws against that. Or so I hear.

Ha ha.... Lol... I would not hunt down any old ex-GF... They are ex for a reason....

Agreed, I've been disappointed in my ex for years. She is old, ugly, gets horrible fuel economy and doesn't pay child support. My Ex on the other hand... well, she's old, ugly and gets horrible fuel economy... but at least she doesn't owe me all the back child support the other one does.

My dad purchased an Explorer in 1994, he kept it clean and maintained it from day one, 256000 miles later we still have the car, almost in the same condition when he bought it, the point is it all comes down on how you maintain your vehicle, regardless of the mileage or what year it was made
