A couple of days ago my 02 explorer started making this noise that sounded like I had a flat tire, but it wasn't. The weird thing is that once I drive about a mile, the sound stops. I was thinking maybe it had something to do with the brakes, like when they heat up they release and the sound stops. The sound is like whoosh.......whoosh......whoosh..etc as the wheel goes around. Any help would be appreciated!!

@kcee,

I do remember a similar phenomenon with our '02. I did some test driving on an empty DIY mart park yard and found out it came from the rear wheels. Tires were fine, brake discs were fine. Then I took off the rear brake discs and found the park brake shoes were separated from their friction linings.

the parking brake shoes are an often overlooked component, that could definatly be the cause. it sounds like a thorough inspection of the brakes and bearings is in order
