Will Grand Marquis 4.6 replace Explorer 4.6?? Trouble In Paradise!!!

Is the Explorer aluminum block the same as the Mustang Cobra DOHC aluminum block? The reason I ask is I have an 03 Roush Stage1 Mustang and after reading the link JustinLohmeyer posted my aluminum block sounds like the perfect donor block for a new powerplant for my stang! Sounds like my motor crapping out on me is a gift in disguise!!

To answer your question, the DOHC setup will bolt onto the 2V block. Also, your Roush is a 2V so are you thinking of doing a DOHC swap or something? If it were me, instead of a DOCH swap, I'd use Trickflow's topend kit for the 4.6 2V's.

Ok so I got an engine the other day. Its out of an 04 grand marquee wit only 8000 miles on it! Its not even dirty!! Its sitting in the garage withe the intake pulled off of it. Im ready to start ripping mine out. Does anyone know if i might be able to use the marquees injectors? I was just thinking they r new id rather use them but im sure they r a diff size.

I believe you'll have to use the ones from the Explorer because when my dad did the swap, he had a stumbling issue. Swapped the Explorer ones in and it ran great.

Thanks, i figured the explorer injectors would be better to use. When u said he had to use the front drive assembly do u mean he had to swap the timing cover? I was looking at it today and couldnt decide if i should swap it or bolt on my ac compressor (new motor still has pwr steering pump) and use a belt for a grand marquee

Compare the two because if they are different, then you will need to swap them. I'm not 100% if the timing covers allow you to put your belt drive assemblies(powersteering, altenator, etc) in different places and if they do, then you need to use the Explorer one.

The reason for the injectors is because I believe the Explorer uses a return style fuel system and the Grand Marquis does not. So when at idle, you will get stumbling issue from to much fuel. I'll talk with my father about those issues next time I see him.

Alternotor bolts on the same pwr steering pump is already there and if worse comes to worse ill get an a/c compressor for the car (i think mine might be junk) and just use the pully sysyem on the motor.

By the way what did your dad do with his knock sensors?

Well i have the engine ready to pull. Gonna pull it tomorrow and start putting my stuff on the new one. I think i will take the time to degrease my engine compartment its pretty gunky. Ill post an update tomorrow.

Well its out! Tomorrow ill start switching everything over to the new engine. Hard to get much done when u work 12 hrs a day.

I still have yet to talk to my dad about the kock sensors, but just to put everything from the Explorer motor onto the new one. I believe the knock sensors will be under the intake so you will see them when you pull the Explorer intake off.

Also, it wouldn't be a bad idea to take pictures of what's different and needed to swap onto the non-explorer 4.6's for future refrence for people. I would have done that, but I live to far away and my dad isn't handy with a camera. Good luck!

Ill take some pics for sure. Im starting to see why your dad had to use the explorer timing cover and not the crown vic one. The crown vic and grand marquis power steering pump is mounted lower and will not allow access to our oil filter. Ill update when i onow more.

ok... just wrapping up a 4-month ordeal doing my engine swap.

1. Iron-block = 80+lbs of added weight to a pig heavy SUV.. especially if its AWD.. Just sayin...

2. I can speak to '02-'03 vs '04-05 EXPLORER aluminum engines. pretty much everything outside the long block and intake is totally different. harness, EGR, TB, fuel rails, PVC, etc etc etc.

So with that said: Put your "new" engine on a stand. Set your old engine on a tire or another stand and literally strip the "NEW" engine down to bare intake and leave the front dress. Now, just take each part from the old engine, move it over. injectors, fuel rail, coil packs, EGR, Elbow, TB, etc...

The knock sensors are the other challenge. You can safely drill and tap the bosses just go slowly and and be sure to have the right tap on hand. Just go carefully.

3. putting it all back together: Be sure to have the starter/power/alt harness hanging DOWN!!! talk about a mutha to fix once its all in... just did that tonight... 2 hours of fighting to get the harness down past the pass. side engine mount.

4. The radiator/Trans cooler/condenser set up is Bass-Akwards Stupid engineering... go to your local body shop/paint supply place, get some clips that are called "u-nuts" they slip over the sheet metal and act like a nut on the back side. Basically you need to reverse engineer the entire Rad-trans cooler-condeser assembly so that everything bolts from the engine side FORWARD so that you aren't fighting putting it all back together... STUPID design.. First time in 30 years working on Ford's I screamed "WTF! did Ford higher someone from GM to design this!??!!??!

5. Anti-freeze: Ford Yellow is NOT required since you're starting fresh.

good luck... I'm finishing mine this weekend.

Update... Motor is in but not finished yet. The marquis timing cover worked with the p/s pump mounted in the lower (marquis) position and i also had to use the oil filter/water neck adapter for the marquis. Putting the oil filter is tight but it works and will be messy during an oil change. I have a body lift which allows more access to the filter location, dont know how it would work out without the lift. I will post pics when i get everything finished.

update? Pics? especially of the oil filter area? what about A/c mounting?

I am concerned about the front cover since the Expl/Monty front cover supposedly has the in-board, lowest driver's side mount hole 1/2" lower than any other block.

Any info would be great.

Rob

Yes, I too am interested if the A/C compressor worked with the Grand Marquis timing cover and accessories. I do not think the Grand Marquis block had raised bosses, so there really isn't anywhere safe to drill for knock sensors. Do the ribs on the power steering pulley line up with the crankshaft pulley?

Limited: Did you ever ask your Dad about the knock sensors?
