Since my O/D light has flashed one day then quit flashing, I'm wondering what I can do to stave off a catastrophe. I changed the filter and fluid a few weeks before it started flashing. Should I add a trans additive? Should I add a trans fluid cooler? Or should I just start saving for the rebuild? This is the 5 speed auto on my '97 ohv 4.0 4wd with 140k miles.

I know the cooler can't hurt. Has anyone done this? It looks like it's a tight fit up against the a/c condenser. It might go better sitting a little lower an closer to the grill. Any advice? Thanks.

Advice is cheap, like worms in a can.....If it were my vehicle, I would look up the codes which cause flashing O/D OFF light, or better, read what code(s) is being generated. It could be almost nothing (Torque Converter Clutch not Locking), or much worse, mismatch of shaft speeds due to clutch, band, one-way clutch problems developing.

The O/D OFF light flash is used when the computer detects internal shaft speeds not correct for conditions. If it's in response to T.C. Clutch, the flash will be gone when starting the next drive, and will return when cruising speed is reached (about 45 mph), when computer learns clutch has not activated. Other flashes may start right away; those would be the more serious. You can drive with a non-engaging T.C. C. forever, if you like, using about 2-5% more fuel.

IMO, the trans. cooler will not help you. imp

I had a similar issue on my 98 Explorer Sport. My O/D light started flashing as I just left Mass on my way to Florida. I had all my tools with me so I pulled out my scanner and I meant to pull the code but I cleared it by accident. Light never came back on. If it does come back on definately pull the codes, I highly doubt a trans. cooler will help.

I don't know what your problem is. That light is like a "check engine" or wrench light. It just means that you need to have your codes read. Once you know which codes are stored, then we can go from there. But you can't just add a transmission cooler and think that it will fix the problem. The only thing the cooler will do, is allow for better cooling. First, you need to figure out why it is getting so hot.
