Ok, i have been reading a lot about automatic transmissions. Well, my transmission has a leak between the engine and the transmission. I went to the mechanic and he said it was probably the front pump seal or something like that. As many of you know, even if its a 10 bucks part to replace, labor is like ten times more. Since my truck only has 98,000 miles, i am thinking IF it only requires that seal, maybe i can change that myself. I am very very mechanically inclined (i have 4 fords at home) but i have never worked in an automatic transmission. The truck shifts FINE and works as normal, just is loosing fluid, and since then i have it parked.

Getting parts in my little town are plenty and surprisingly cheap, so that`s another point why i want to repair my tranny.

Well, i have some questions before this:

1.- It`s very hard to replace the front pump seal (or what can be the cause to have a leak between the engine and the tranny) ?

2.- Do i need special tools ?

3.- It`s very hard to remove the transmission (I have the 1996 Ford service cd, but it`s welcome any suggestions and reading material) ? mine is the 4r55e with the 4X4 and the V6 engine. I think i need to remove the entire transmision, but maybe i`m wrong.

4.- Am i crazy just to attemp that ? hey, i know i know, but its only and automatic transmission !!

Well, if all else fails, i`ll reasemble everything back and take to the shop. But i really want to know if i can do that !

My truck is an explorer 96 V6 4x4

Thanks in advance guys !!!
