Window motors

I have a 91 explorer with power windows. From the research I’ve done I can see it’s a common issue. Is it the regulator, the motor, or possibly both. Both back windows and the passenger front are not working. The driver is on its way out too. I’d like to take care of them at the same time but not sure where to start.

On mine it was the passenger window (2dr so no back power windows). In my case, and I think most, it's the nylon gear in the motor assembly. It's there as a safety feature, to purposely give way in case an arm (or neck!) gets caught in the window as its closing. But over time it deteriorates with teeth breaking off until few if any remain, and then you have a motor that turns but the window doesn't move. I disassembled mine and replaced the gear, re-lubed and re-assembled, and it works fine now. It was finicky getting all the broken-off bits out, but pretty easy overall.

Whether it’s the problem on all your windows or not, I don’t know, but it’s worth looking at.
Another common issue is wiring, you could try testing for power at various points.

Yep, think that's the instructions I followed, worked like a champ. And I'd forgotten, but the plastic "bushings" on mine were also mostly busted up along with the nylon gear itself. Age... memory...
